The study programme was accredited on 3 August 2022.

The purpose of the study programme: to provide locally and internationally competitive professional bachelor's studies in education sciences by promoting the development of the general and professional competence of a teacher in accordance with the professional standard “Teacher” in the areas of training chosen by a student.|
A unique approach combining the content of two or more subjects areas and the teaching methods selected among several sub-programmes.

After studying in one of the following sub-programmes: the Latvian language and literature teacher, the Mathematics teacher, the Social Science and History teacher, the graduates will be able to teach the content learned in the module at the general, optimal and advanced levels, according to the country's general secondary education standard *.

Graduates will be able to teach the first sub-programmes (marked in bold) at general, optimal and advanced levels the second sub-programmes and at the general level, according to the national standard of general secondary education *.

The right to study in a Master's or level 2 professional higher education study programmes, which require a Bachelor's degree.
There is a possibility to continue studies master the content and methodology of teaching another subject or the same subject at the advanced level.

Job opportunities

The right to work as a teacher of secondary education and to teach, in accordance with the competence mastered, the content of the modules either at general or general, optimal, and higher levels in public and private educational establishments: secondary schools, vocational education institutions, training centres, non-formal education institutions, etc.

Full-time – 8 semesters (4 years), 160 CP Part-time – 9 semesters (4,5 years), 160 CP  
For Latvian citizens/non-citizens, EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and EU long-term residents 2100 € (full-time), 1860 € (part-time) per year. For nationals of other countries, 2800 € (full-time), 2300 € (part-time) per year.
For admission in the autumn 2023 semester FULL-TIME: Social Science and History teacher - 12, Mathematics teacher - 15, Latvian and Literature teacher - 15, English teacher - 15, Computer Science teacher - 12, Design and Technology teacher - 12, Science (Biology/Chemistry/Geography/Physics) teacher - 16, German teacher - 10. PART-TIME: only tuition fee-based places.

General rules

Secondary education

Admission criteria for persons who have acquired secondary education in 2004 and onwards:

  • CE in Latvian
  • CE in English, French, Russian or German
  • CE in Mathematics *
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) of all the centralised exams*
  • Admission exam
  • Final grade in the subject of the study programme (not lower than 7) **

*The following coefficients are applied to ensure the mutual comparability of the results of the CE:

  • for exams at the optimum level of learning, a coefficient of 0.75 is applied, to compare to the advanced level;
  • a coefficient of 0,50 shall be applied to exams at the general level
  • the results of the centralised examinations obtained before 2022 shall be aligned with the examinations of the optimum level of learning and shall be assigned a coefficient of 0.75.

For individuals who had acquired secondary education before 2008, the centralised examination in Math may be replaced by an final grade in Math (or the average grade in algebra and geometry) in the certificate of secondary education.

Admission criteria for persons who have obtained secondary education up to 2004 (not including), as well as for persons who have obtained secondary education abroad and persons who have been exempted from the CE arrangement:

  • GPA in Latvian and literature
  • Final grade in English, French, German, or Russian
  • GPA in compulsory subjects
  • Admission exam
  • Final grade in the subject of the study programme (not lower than 7)**

** The study areas with subjects with the final grade may not be lower than 7:

  • English teacher –final grade in English
  • Science teacher (Biology, Physics, Geography, or Chemistry teacher) — final grade in Biology, Physics, Geography, or Chemistry
  • Computer Science teacher –final grade in Computer Science (Informatics, Digital Design, Robotics, or Programming)
  • Design and Technology teacher — final grade in Design and Technology ( Home Economics, Visual Art, Informatics, Computer, or Digital Design)
  • Latvian Language and Literature Teacher – Final Grade in Latvian and Literature
  • Mathematics teacher – final grade in Math (or average algebra and geometry)
  • Social Science and History Teacher – final grade in Social Science and History (History, Social Science, or History and Social Sciences)
  • German teacher – final grade in German.

 

Description of the admission exam

The exam consists of two parts: motivation for the choice of the teaching profession (written, 600 points and an interview, 400 points). It is recommended to take evidence (if any) regarding previous experience in pedagogical work (work in children's and youth camps, Sunday school, as a nanny, etc.), participation in Latvian State or international Olympiads and Latvian State pupils' scientific conferences and volunteer work (participation in youth NGO, non-formal education, e.g., camps, courses, seminars, etc..

Summative evaluation, may include

Choice of the teaching profession

(in writing)

The candidates answer five questions (30 minutes):

  • The choice of the teaching profession,
  • An assessment of their main objectives;
  • Assessment of their skills and capabilities;
  • Public activity, experience working with people;
  • Research activities and projects

 

 

0 - 600 points.

 

The Committee shall assess whether the candidate has covered the five questions and has proven the competence of the use of the Latvian language.

2.

Choice of the teaching profession

(oral part)

The interview takes place in groups of three candidates – 15 minutes. In special cases individually - 7 minutes..

The committee asks the candidates about:

• Choice of a study programme;

• Previous learning experience;

• Current issues in education and culture;

• Readiness for studies.

0 – 400 points. 

 The candidate's answers to the questions are evaluated according to the following criteria:

• professional motivation;

• understanding of the study field;

• ability to express oneself;

• communication skills and

  • speech quality.

The minimal number of points in the entrance examination for starting studies is 500 points

International student mobility - ERASMUS +

As part of the programme, students have the possibility to study for one or two semester in all EU Member States, including Denmark, Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Estonia and Lithuanian universities free of charge. Students have the opportunity to attend lectures of visiting professors from Austria, Germany, Britain, Ireland, and other countries due to the cooperation agreements signed by LU PPMF.

Full-time: Monday – Friday (budget sites and paying students)

Part-time in Riga: Studies take place on two working-day evenings remotely (Wednesday and Thursday) and on-site on Friday or Saturday (only fee-based studies from 15 students in the group)

The study semester starts from the first full week of the month (September and February), the next academic year begins on 4 September 2023.
