About the project:

Sepsis, a life-threatening systemic response to infection, affects an estimated 49.8 million patients worldwide annually and carries a mortality rate of 19.2%. It can rapidly escalate from localized infection to severe organ dysfunction and septic shock. Abnormalities in microcirculatory perfusion, leading to suboptimal tissue oxygenation, are critical to sepsis progression. Despite advancements in sepsis management, the high mortality rate underscores the need for novel personalized strategies. An interdisciplinary team of biophotonics experts and clinicians seeks to address this gap by developing an optical imaging technique for personalized hemodynamic phenotyping of microcirculation in septic patients. The proposed technique integrates active dynamic thermography and narrow-band imaging, offering non-invasive, real-time evaluation of microcirculatory perfusion for patient phenotyping. The project aims to develop a prototype device suitable for bedside use in intensive care units. Using the imaging data, unique physiological phenotypes will be identified, paving the way for personalized patient management strategies. This approach is anticipated to significantly improve clinical outcomes, reduce associated costs and morbidity, and revolutionize sepsis management.
