The University of Latvia (UL) will continue to provide financial support to Ukrainian citizens studying at UL who have left Ukraine or cannot return to Ukraine, as well as to Ukrainian research staff at the university.

In solidarity with the Ukrainian people, UL grants 100% waiver to Ukrainian students of tuition fees for the spring semester of the academic year 2023/2024, as well as 100% rent concessions at UL dormitories.

The university invites Ukrainian scientists to continue their research, which has been interrupted by the war, in Latvia by granting support funding until 31 December 2024.

The support is granted from the UL’s centralized funds as co-financing for the budget of a UL institution, making a settlement of the actual costs once a quarter. The support is granted for the employment of Ukrainian research staff in UL institutions.

“We continue to stand united with the Ukrainian people! The university has established close and productive cooperation with several Ukrainian higher education institutions, and we certainly will persist in supporting Ukrainian scientists and the continuity of their research. I thank my colleagues, especially the UL Academic Department, for encouragement to continue providing support. This decision will promote even closer cooperation between the university and Ukraine!”, emphasised UL Rector, Professor Indriķis Muižnieks.

Likewise, the university assists Ukrainian citizens in cooperation with non-governmental organizations. In early December – from 11 to 15 December – the association "TEV" in cooperation with UL organized an international training seminar and conference (with the support of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia and the Ministry of Education and Science). The training seminar brought together the school psychologists from Ukraine and Latvia. UL underscores that it is very important to support the Ukrainian people at this difficult time, as they heroically resist Russian aggression, suffering heavy losses. Hence, the training seminar and conference were dedicated to the possibilities of mitigating psychological traumas, their psycho-emotional consequences and the aftermath of traumatic experiences incurred to Ukrainian civilians by the armed conflict.
