The University of Latvia (UL) expresses its support to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in the fight against Russia's brutal aggression.

The University of Latvia (UL) asserts support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in the battle against the barbaric invasion by Russia. The UL will provide all possible support to the Ukrainian students studying at the University, as well as the academic staff. The University of Latvia governance and the Senate have discussed further possibilities of assistance to Ukrainian scientists, offering them the opportunity to continue their research at the University of Latvia.

Rector, Prof. I. Muižnieks: “We have a very close and productive cooperation with several Ukrainian universities, we know our colleagues well, they are our friends. We have contacted the citizens of Ukraine who are studying or working at the University of Latvia, and consulted them regarding the types of support they currently need. We will act accordingly. We will help ensure the continuity of research carried out by Ukrainian researchers and education of Ukrainian students. I would like to express my gratitude to all the students and staff of the UL who support Ukraine's fight against aggression with their civic attitude, social resourcefulness and also with donations. The UL suspends co-operation with Russian institutions and individuals who have not explicitly condemned the war in Ukraine.”

The University of Latvia highly appreciates the stand of those Russian citizens and organizations that have called for an end to the war in Ukraine.

In this crisis situation, the University of Latvia urges students and staff to exercise utmost vigilance and care in both real and virtual communication, to critically evaluate the information provided by various information sources regarding the international situation and not to respond to provocations that may lead to inciting national hatred and conflict.

The attack on Ukraine is an unprecedented violation of international law, the scale of which we could not have conceived of even a week ago. Latvia, the University of Latvia and the people of Latvia are together with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Solidarity of the whole civilized world with Ukraine is now crucial to stop the aggressor.

In addition, the University of Latvia launched a withdrawal procedure at the beginning of the week from the Eurasian University Association.

The University of Latvia invites everyone to support the people of Ukraine, which is most convenient to do on the platform ziedot.lv.
