The University of Latvia (UL) attains a high score in the prestigious THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2022, taking the 137th place in the overall rankings.

In the rankings of 2022, the University of Latvia has taken the 137th place, rising by ten places compared to 2021. THE Emerging Economies University Rankings use the same 13 performance indicators as THE World University Rankings to judge institutions on their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. However, they have different weightings to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies. For example, more emphasis is placed on indicators of international cooperation and cooperation with industry. The University of Tartu is ranked the highest among the Baltic universities, taking the 39th place, securing the place amongst the top fifty universities (in 2021, it ranked 37th).

The rankings reflect that medical research, especially Covid-related studies has gained great momentum and that has an impact on the results of rankings. This year, the University of Latvia has improved its results in all the indicators.

Riga Stradiņš University (ranked 115th and for the first time entering these rankings), Riga Technical University (ranked 251st–300th) and Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (with the 500th + place) are also included in the rankings, representing Latvian higher education institutions. Several Chinese universities maintain their leading position in the rankings. The 1st place is taken by Peking University, the 2nd place – by Tsinghua University, while the 3rd place – by Zhejiang University.

In total, THE Emerging Economies University Rankings include 698 universities from 60 countries, indicating significant expansion since 2021.

THE is one of the three most influential university rankings worldwide, published for the 19th year. THE compiles a total of 11 university rankings by subject – Clinical and Health, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Psychology, Arts and Humanities, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Computer Science, and Engineering.
