The University of Latvia (UL) ranks 201st to 300th in the global THE Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020, rising in results of the rankings, which include infrastructure, innovation and cooperation indicators.

These are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting work done by universities and highlighting significant endeavours that are not rated in rankings of other classifications.

The UL has achieved the best results in categories “Decent work and economic growth” (the 59th place), “Partnerships for the goals” (the 60th place), Peace, justice and strong institutions” (the 60th place), and “Industry innovations and infrastructure” (the 91st place).

“The University of Latvia in its development strategy increasingly focuses on the goals of sustainable development. Achievement of these goals requires investment in study programmes, research and practical activities. A major step toward sustainable development goals is growth of the University of Latvia Academic Centre, as well as the contribution of LU scientists to elaboration of national development plans, providing their expertise. The University of Latvia can be proud of its work in studies and safeguarding of culture and history,” says Jānis Stonis, University of Latvia Deputy Rector for Students and Social Affairs.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) comprise the following aspirations: no poverty; zero hunger; good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry innovations and infrastructure; reduced inequalities; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice and strong institutions; partnerships for the goals.

A total of 766 universities from 85 countries were ranked, and Latvian higher education institutions in these rankings were represented by the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Riga Stradiņš University and Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies. The first place in THE Impact Rankings is taken by the University of Auckland, New Zealand, followed by the University of Sydney, Australia, and the Western Sydney University, Australia, has taken the third place.
