University of Latvia informs that the Ministry of Welfare has established a system whereby international students who currently remain in Latvia can receive financial assistance from municipal social services.

Amendments to the Law “On the Activities of State Institutions during an Emergency Situation Related to the Spread of Covid-19” temporarily provide that foreign students who have remained in Latvia and study through a distance learning during the spread of Covid-19 and who have been left without means of subsistence during the emergency situation and one month after its conclusion can apply to the municipal social services.

As of Monday, April 13, the municipal social services are informed that foreign students can turn to them for assistance, and these services are ready to be provided in English.

It is important that the student's place of residence is declared in the specific municipality and the student applying for assistance must have a temporary residence permit (RP) in Latvia.

If you are currently in Latvia and left without means of living, then you may be eligible for assistance from the social service agency of the local government, where you have declared your place of residence (your official address in Latvia).

Please contact your local municipality for further instructions. It is important that the student's place of residence is declared in that particular municipality, where he or she seeks help.

Full list of municipalities and their contacts can be found here (at the bottom of “Governments Social Service Offices in Latvia” is a file containing the list of all the municipalities).
