On Thursday, March 26, in the extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the University of Latvia Professor Indriķis Muižnieks was approved as the rector of the University of Latvia.

"My priority is to surmount the new challenges and ensure that studies and research continue in as high a quality as possible in the circumstances of emergency," UL Rector Indriķis Muižnieks told.

I. Muižnieks explained that he had extensive plans and assignments, but the prevailing priority at present is overcoming the challenges posed by the Covid-19 disease caused by the coronavirus. In his view, this emergency will teach everyone a great deal and possibly allow for new, more efficient solutions to make processes work better.

He also said that despite the adjustments imposed by Covid-19, the university has an ample amount of work, such as updating the UL five-year strategies and continuing the curriculum development plan.

I. Muižnieks reported that this year several important groups of study programmes must be accredited, and the new teacher programme and a number of other programmes, which are being developed by UL in cooperation with other higher educational establishments, must be licensed.
