The University of Latvia (UL) encourages staff and students to comply with the recommendations and precautionary measures during the spread of the Covid-19 virus:

During the period from March 13, 2020 to May 14, 2020, UL introduces the following epidemiological security measures to curb the spread of Covid-19:

  • Suspend conducting and implementation of the process of on-site lectures, classes, seminars and other forms of studies, further education and interest education requiring physical presence of students and staff (including cultural and sports training, competitions and rehearsals), as well as organisation and holding tests and examinations (including centralized state examinations);
  • Cancel and discontinue (irrespective of the number of participants) any organization of scientific, educational, festive, commemorative, entertainment, cultural, sporting and recreational activities, meetings, parades and any other face-to-face events in the public domain at the UL;
  • Organize the study process in form of distance learning on the basis of the UL e-learning environment, including video translation, recording and other forms;
  • The main UL structural units, including the scientific institutes and the UL administration, should, as far as possible, perform their work remotely;
  • UL students are permitted to access the UL premises (libraries) after presenting a valid UL student identification card and only for the purpose of receiving books from the library during the opening hours of the UL libraries.

The coronavirus that causes Covid-19 infection is spread by direct contact with an infected person, by tiny droplets dispersed by an infected person when speaking, sneezing or coughing, or by indirect contact – touching surfaces and objects contaminated by discharge from an infected person’s airways. Therefore, the main precautions recommended by leading experts are:

1. To remain at home, whenever possible, to work remotely, and to refrain from visiting public places at all or to do so only in cases of extreme necessity;

2. To wash hands with soap and to do it frequently, thoroughly, for at least 20 seconds. It is especially important to wash hands when returning home after visiting public places, after sneezing and coughing, after contact with patients or their surroundings, after the toilet, before eating and in other cases;

3. To adhere to a distance of two metres from other people or social distancing in cases when it is, after all, necessary to leave home.

The disease manifests itself in a variety of ways, but the most common symptoms include:

1. high body temperature (fever);

2. fatigue;

3. dry cough.

Other symptoms:

• shortness of breath (possible tightness in the chest);

• muscle pain;

• sore, painful throat;

• seldom – diarrhea, nausea and runny nose.

These symptoms are usually mild and start gradually. There are also cases when people become infected but do not show any symptoms of the disease.

Most people (about 80 %) recover from the disease. About one in six people infected with Covid-19 experiences a severe course of disease with severe breathing problems, high fever. Older people (over 60 years of age) and those with medical problems such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes or cancer are more likely to fall severely ill.

In case of experiencing mild symptoms:

1. Completely cease any contact with healthy people (quarantine);

2. Contact your GP for treatment and testing advice.

If you have a very high fever, a severe cough and difficulty breathing, call 113 immediately.

In accordance with the preventive instructions of the Latvian Centre of Infectious Diseases, hand disinfectants have been installed at the University of Latvia. Intensified cleaning and disinfection of contact surfaces is also performed.

We invite UL employees and students to follow the current information of the Government of the Republic of Latvia, as well as instructions and directives of the UL management!

The current instructions and directives will be available at the portal lu.lv.
