“Ars Moriendi”, first festival dedicated to death will be held in Riga, Latvia on 20 - 21st March 2020, it will include an academic conference, Death Experiences, and detailed cultural programme.

The conference itself will cover such areas of death studies as ethics and morals, celebration of death, impact on environment, social history of death, and erasing the dead. And on the other hand the cultural program will emphasize the role of death in music over the centuries. For the first time in Latvia will be performed Totentanz (Dance of the Death) by German composer Hugo Distler will be performed. It will be interpreted by conductor Vita Timermane - Moora with a choir specially created for the festival. Also, in the Great Hall of University of Latvia it will be possible to hear compositions by Schuman, Lizst and Saint-Saens by pianist Katrina Kroja, organist Aivars Kalais and other musicians. In Latvian cultural environment death and its rituals have a significant role both within Latvian life perception and philosophy and within the context of religious notions. The main purpose of the conference Death Experiences is to popularise death studies within Latvian and Baltic academic environment and highlight specific Latvian death related traditions, dying and forming of nations cultural memory. The conference invites you to share your research and its findings, highlighting current events and trends in the study of death as a phenomenon in various disciplines - theology, history, anthropology, and more.

Researchers from all over the worlds are invited to submit their papers in the following sections of the academic conference:

  • Death morality & ethics
  • Death experiences
  • Law and death
  • Death and environmental impact
  • Celebrated death
  • Death of cultures
  • Death from social view point
  • Erasing the dead

Time for presentation 20 minutes. Please submit your abstracts (max 300 words) and short curriculum vitae (max 200 words) in English all in one file electronically to deathexperiences@yahoo.com by 10th February 2020. Please ensure the paper is communicated clearly as the conference is multi-disciplinary. Working language of the conference will be English.

The cost of conference is €100, this will include participation, a meal and culture events.
