In accordance with the requirements of the international labour market, significant changes have been introduced to the master's study programme “European Studies” implemented by the University of Latvia Faculty of Business, Management and Economics (FBME). From September 2019, the new title of the programme will be "European Studies and Economic Diplomacy" and its graduates will hereafter receive the master's degree in International Economics.

“The changes in the master's study programme are in line with current trends of the European Union and aim to train modern educated professionals capable of solving interdisciplinary problems related to European integration processes and accomplished in professional conducting of negotiations. The programme provides knowledge of the interaction between the economic, social, political and legal aspects of the EU, enables to develop multidimensional analytical and economic diplomacy skills, and promotes holistic thinking and problem-solving capacity. Interdisciplinarity involves not only mastering different disciplines but also being open to addressing complex issues, teaching students to think globally, exhaustively, and to draw meaningful and comprehensive conclusions,” emphasizes prof. Inna Šteinbuka.

The programme will be conducted in English and welcome both foreign and domestic students.

The study programme is similar to the two-year interdisciplinary master's programme “International and Diplomatic Studies” at the University of Economics, Prague. Both programmes encompass international politics, international law, as well as theory and practice in diplomacy, while EU issues form a particularly substantial part of both programmes.

The enhanced programme “European Studies and Economic Diplomacy”" is intended to be a continuation of the bachelor's programme “International Economics and Commercial Diplomacy” implemented by the University of Latvia FBME, and will provide master’s students with the level of academic qualification required for doctoral studies. It offers an in-depth study of international economic relations with a particular focus upon the theoretical and practical problems of international economy and economic diplomacy, international trade and finance, as well as the economic aspects of international law and international politics.
