The building of the University of Latvia

The University of Latvia (UL) demonstrates a steady performance in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings of world universities, THE sustainability rankings, maintaining its position in the group of the 201st–300th place among more than 2300 higher education institutions worldwide.

“The fact that the University of Latvia has the capacity to maintain its high position at a time when more than 350 new universities have been added to the rankings confirms the effectiveness of our sustainability policy and systemic approach. We continue to adhere to the principles based on the integration of environmental, economic and social dimensions in the University’s activities,” emphasizes the UL Rector, Prof. Gundars Bērziņš. “The development of the University is no longer conceivable without firm correlation of responsible governance, equality, quality education and innovation. Our role is to be leaders in the academic field, and, furthermore – the drivers of social change.”

The strengthening of the position compared to previous years is a significant confirmation of the consistent implementation of the UL sustainability strategy and high results. In previous years, UL has already earned the leading position in the Baltic region in the field of sustainable development and also in the overall rankings, and retains it.

In 2025, UL received the highest assessment in three areas:

  • Gender equality – acknowledging the work in the field of ensuring gender equality and equal opportunities;

  • Decent work and economic growth – for contribution to building a resilient, inclusive and sustainable economy,

  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure – for developing a sustainable innovation environment and cooperation between academia, industry and society.

UL has also achieved high results in contributing to the UN Development Goals of Partnerships, Life below water, Sustainable cities and communities, as well as Good health and well-being.

THE sustainability rankings are the only international system that assesses the impact of higher education institutions based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This assessment reflects the performance of universities in areas of importance to society that traditional rankings often do not address.
