The aim of the UL Summer School of Latvian Language and Culture is to promote the learning of the Latvian language and to deepen understanding of Latvia’s culture, society, and history. Classes will take place at the UL in central Riga, and the programme is intended for participants with different levels of Latvian language proficiency—both beginners and those who wish to improve their existing skills.
During the summer school, participants will take part in intensive language classes. The programme will also include lectures on Latvian history, culture, literature, and folklore, as well as discussions with specialists from various fields.
An important part of the summer school is the cultural programme, which will take participants beyond the classroom and outside Riga to explore Latvia. This year, participants will visit the Kurzeme region (Talsi, Mazirbe, and Kolka), as well as Vidzeme (Sigulda and Turaida).
Excursions in Riga, visits to cultural institutions, and various informal activities will also be organized to promote intercultural communication and cooperation among participants.
Applications for the summer school with a Latvian state scholarship are open until 1 April. The list of countries whose students and academic staff are eligible to apply for the scholarship is available on the VIAA website.
The list of required documents, a detailed summer school programme, and contact information for inquiries are available on the UL Summer School of Latvian Language and Culture website.
