The Research Department is a coordinating, supervising, and supporting unit of the UL Administration. It consists of the Research Support Unit, Research Project Unit and Research Initiatives Unit.
The Research Support Unit develops the UL Scientific Activity Development Plan, supervises and coordinates its implementation, coordinates science funding mechanisms and proposes improvements, supports the representation of UL research activities externally, organises the annual international scientific conference of the UL, and assists in organising other science-related events. It ensures quality control of scientific activities, develops guidelines for organising scientific conferences, coordinates external evaluations of scientific performance, manages UL representation in information systems supporting research, and supports school students’ involvement in scientific research.
The Research Project Unit collects information on national and international research project calls and informs UL staff accordingly. It prepares, manages, and administers project applications for research support programmes at the institutional level, coordinates cooperation, and provides support to internal and external parties involved in research projects at all project stages. It also manages risks in research projects and administers research development initiatives, including the UL Research Support Programme.
The Research Initiatives Unit monitors science-related developments in Latvia, supports research and faculty initiatives, launches new science-related initiatives at UL, prepares priority international research project proposals, and assists in the preparation of other international research projects.
