Citizens of EU, EEA and Switzerland

Degree students, who are Union citizens and reside in the Republic of Latvia for more than 90 days, counting from the first day of entry, must register at the OCMA and receive a registration certificate.

Citizens of visa-free countries

There are several countries (besides EU, EEA and Switzerland), whose citizens do not need visa to enter Latvia and can reside in the Schengen Area up to 90 days within a half year. If a student remains here longer than 90 days starting from the first day of arrival within a half year, student must apply for the residence permit at the OCMA. N.B. When taking non-direct flights to Latvia, it is highly recommended to choose the flight route, where Latvia is the first Schengen entry country.

Citizens of other countries

After the invitation (prepared from UL coordinator) is approved at the OCMA:

  • Students from countries with additional assessment must apply for the residence permit at the Embassy of Latvia in their country of residence;
  • Citizens of other countries may enter Latvia with a visa and submit the documents for residence permit on the arrival in Riga, but UL suggests to apply at the embassy, as well.
  • The following students are advised to contact the coordinator at UL:
  • If there is no Embassy of Latvia in your country of residence;
  • If you are a citizen of a country that requires visa to enter Latvia, however, you have a valid residence permit in one of the Schengen countries.

Other nationals with EU residence permit

Degree students (non-EU citizens), who already have a residence permit from other EU country, can remain in Latvia no longer than 90 days within half a year. If a student stays longer than 90 days starting from the first day of arrival, he/she has to apply for the Latvian residence permit at the OCMA.

Long-term visa for exchange students

Citizens of EU, EEA and Switzerland

Exchange students who do not plan to reside in Latvia for more than 12 months do not need to register at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA).

Citizens of visa-free countries

There are several countries (besides EU, EEA and Switzerland) whose citizens do not need visa to enter Latvia. If student needs to remain in Latvia for more than 90 days, after arrival in Riga he/ she has to apply for a long-term (D-type) visa at the OCMA. N.B. What elements make up the study process at UL and what should be taken into account when you are a student at UL? How to choose study courses, keep up with the lecture schedule, change the study programme? This section describes the most important stages and elements of the study process to help you navigate your daily life as a student.

Curricula and lecture time-table

Your Curricula shows which courses you will take during your studies. You can easily review it in your LUIS account in the section “Curricula”. Here you will find the study courses planned for each semester and the number of ECTS points for each course.

The lecture time-table is a list of lectures planned for the entire study semester. You can easily browse it in your LUIS account, in the section “lecture time-table   ”, as well as see any changes during the semester. Please note that some lectures or even entire study courses may take place remotely, –you will find out about it in your lecture time-table. The methodologist of the selected study programme at your faculty will assist, if you need clarification. You can also contact your course supervisor with questions.

Choice of courses for degree students

The Curricula consists of courses in parts A, B and C. The courses in Part A or Compulsory part are the same for all students of a particular study programme, courses in Part B or Limited Elective part are specialization courses in the study programme that you can choose from the faculty’s offer. Elective courses – Part C or are the section of the study programme where you can choose other study courses of interest to you – including those that are not related to your study programme. You will receive a certain number of credit points for successfully completing each course. In full-time studies, you must collect 60 ECTS credit points during the academic year (courses in parts A, B and C combined), but for part-time studies the number of ECTS may be lower. You can choose courses in your LUIS account or by contacting the study programme methodologist.

Choice of courses for exchange students

Most courses are taught together with local students. Each semester, UL offers regular Latvian and Russian language courses for international students.

The provisional course list for exchange students is available on UL website:

Examinations and examination sessions

Each semester of study consists of a study period, when lectures and seminars take place, and a subsequent testing period, or examination session. The study period of the autumn semester usually lasts from September to Christmas, while the official testing period (Winter Examination Session) begins in January. The study period of the spring semester starts at the beginning of February and concludes at the end of May. June is the time of Summer Examination Session.

Academic integrity and ethics

Academic culture is of paramount importance at UL – it forms the foundation of the University. To understand the precise meaning and requirements of academic integrity, see The Regulations for Academic Integrity at the University of Latvia and The Academic Ethics Codex of the University of Latvia. Both documents define the principles and norms for honest and responsible conduct of the UL academic community. The Codex is valid in academic work and in mutual communication at UL.

UL offers an e-course on academic integrity to improve understanding of the reasons why it is vital to observe academic integrity in the study process. Every student at UL must complete this self-taught course independently and pass a self-assessment test. The course is not included in the study programmes and no credit points are awarded for it. It is intended for all students, regardless of their status. Information about the e-course is available in e-studies.

Artificial intelligence at UL

To help UL employees and students navigate the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence (AI) and be aware of the risks associated with it, UL has created Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence to promote the responsible, fair and creative use of AI tools in the study process and to help mitigate the risks thereof. To avoid stumbling upon “AI traps”, read these guidelines!

Student representation at the University of Latvia is an essential part of the academic environment: here students learn, as well as create, influence and develop their own study environment. Each faculty is proud of its student self-government, and the entire University is united by the UL Student Council – the voice of students in the University’s decision-making bodies. Here you will learn how student representatives advocate for your well-being and how you can get involved in shaping student life at UL.

Student self-governments at the faculties

The student self-government (SSG) of each faculty is a place where students’ ideas and needs are transformed into real decisions. SSG is formed by elected student representatives – students of the faculty. The self-governments actively participate in the life of the faculties, organize cultural and social events and provide support to anyone who needs it. SSG members are the voice of students in faculty meetings and decision-making bodies, defending your interests and ideas. If you want to actively participate in university processes, represent your fellow students or test your talents in leadership, become a SSG member! To do this, you need to participate in the self-government elections, which take place annually in early November. Every UL student can vote and run in the SSG elections.

UL Student Council

The UL Student Council (UL SC) is the main decision-making body representing the rights and interests of UL students in academic, social and cultural matters. UL SC ensures that students’ opinions are taken into account in UL decision-making, organizes and monitors the election of student representatives to the UL Senate, the UL Constitutional Assembly, the Academic Arbitration Court, committees, working groups and other collegial institutions. It also organizes the largest student event “Aristotle”, which annually marks the beginning of a new academic year, as well as participates in organizing other informative and entertaining events. You can get involved in UL SC, ask questions, propose ideas and become part of an enthusiastic student community.

A part of UL SC is University of Latvia International Students’ Collegium (UL ISC)

UL ISC consists of international students and operates entirely in English. Its main objective is to represent international students’ interests and help improve the everyday life of international students at the University of Latvia. The International Students’ Collegium consists of ±7 members that are appointed by the UL Student Council. The UL ISC election takes place every November.

The UL Student Council is composed of elected representatives of faculty student self-governments. The number of representatives depends on the number of students in the faculty and the quotas calculated by the UL Student Council Election Commission. For more information, please visit the UL Student Council website.

To ensure sustainable development of UL and to encourage UL community to act responsibly towards the environment and natural resources in their daily lives, UL has established Eco-Council. It educates UL employees and students about responsible resource consumption, promotes environmentally friendly daily habits and implements various eco-initiatives. UL participates in the global Eco-Schools programme and other certification systems and cooperates with environmental organizations.

UL has developed guidelines on how to promote equal opportunities and an inclusive environment for students with functional disabilities. The buildings of the Academic Centre in Torņakalns are fully adapted to accessibility requirements, while solutions are sought in other buildings according to specific needs.

UL provides social programmes, support scholarships, tuition fee reductions, as well as a flexible approach to planning lecture venues to ensure physical accessibility. If students need customized study materials or assistant support, UL seeks particular solutions.

Already during your studies, you have the opportunity to get involved in science and research – to work side by side with experienced researchers and collaborate with UL research institutes. If you are considering a career in science in the future, UL offers you various opportunities to become immersed in scientific activities both within and outside the study process, for example, by helping your faculty organize the Researchers’ Night events.

Research institutes and centres

UL has 18 scientific institutes that conduct high-level fundamental and applied research in various fields. The institutes of the faculties conduct interdisciplinary research in physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, economics, as well as linguistics, history and philosophy, biology, microbiology, cardiology, clinical medicine and biotechnology, making a significant contribution in the vast range of spheres – from natural and medical sciences to social and humanitarian fields.

UL Institute of Solid State Physics and Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science carry out high-level research in materials science, informatics and mathematics, strengthening the country’s innovation capacity. The UL agency – the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art is the leading centre for research into cultural heritage, literary history and traditional culture in Latvia. These institutes represent the research potential of UL and promote the country’s research excellence both nationally and internationally. The institutes often implement international projects and cooperate with state and industry partners.

Six study centres of UL provide interdisciplinary study programmes, coordinate academic projects, and develop areas of strategic importance to UL, such as languages, pedagogy, or information technology, whereas faculty study centres organize the study process, provide support to students, and coordinate teaching staff within their specific fields.

Grant programmes

UL offers various types of regular grant programmes that enable students of all study levels to implement research projects under the guidance of experts. UL also participates in international research projects that provide students and academic staff with the opportunity to participate in research, mobility and development programmes, as well as access to international research infrastructures. By participating in international projects, you can gain experience working in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams, build new contact networks for the exchange of ideas and professional growth.

Doctoral studies

Doctoral studies are the highest level of studies that follow master’s studies. If you have a calling to become a scientist, explore the opportunities provided by UL to build a career in research and science! Currently, UL is introducing a new doctoral study model, which provides for a transition to doctoral studies with employment and interdisciplinary studies. This means that doctoral students can devote themselves to studies/research during their studies and engage in academic activities already at the beginning of their research, receiving remuneration for their work.

All doctoral study programmes and promotion, career development of young researchers, monitoring and improvement of doctoral programme quality, as well as promotion of international cooperation are implemented by the UL Doctoral School.

Becoming a UL doctoral student means participation in international projects and UL research support grants. These grants are intended to promote the involvement of doctoral students in active research, promote the development of high-quality doctoral theses and create a sustained generation of researchers in Latvia.

After acquiring your doctoral degree, you can continue your academic and research career by participating in postdoctoral research competitions. These projects provide an opportunity to receive financial support to carry out individual research work, develop international cooperation and strengthen your position in the early stages of your research career.

Regularly check the section “Science” of the UL portal and the website “Ozolzīle”, – here you will find programme announcements, information about current projects, opportunities and applications for doctoral studies and research.

The University of Latvia is the largest and leading higher education institution in Latvia, founded on 28 September 1919 as the national higher education institution of the then newly established state of Latvia. Currently, UL consists of six faculties, six regional branches and 18 scientific institutes. Around 15 000 students from more than 70 countries study at UL, and it employs more than 3000 members of academic and administrative staff. The university’s management team consists of Rector Gundars Bērziņš and three vice-rectors – Vice-Rector for Studies Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga, Vice-Rector for Research Guntars Kitenbergs and Vice-Rector for Development Enno Ence. The university is affectionately known as Alma Mater (literally “Nurturer/bounteous mother”), thus indicating its essential role in the life path of each of its students.

The mission of UL is characterized by its historical slogan “For Science and Fatherland” (Scientiae et Patriae), as its goal has always been to ensure active participation and significant contribution to the development of science, higher education and the state. The University of Latvia contributes to the global processes of science, higher education, knowledge, technology transfer and innovation, ensures the growth of Latvia’s democracy and culture, the development of the Latvian language and the prosperity of the national economy.

UL has its own unique traditions and events, – either cultivated over the years or established quite recently. Each has its own meaningful place in the life of the UL community. These include ceremonial events, important academic events, as well as fun, informative and entertaining activities that unite the student community.

Aristotle

You have not become a full-fledged student of UL until you have participated in the annual student festival “Aristotle”. Traditionally, “Aristotle” takes place on the last Sunday of summer, ringing in the beginning of the new academic year, and has become an integral tradition of the cultural and academic life of UL. Everyone is invited to take part in the festival – new and existing students, faculty, alumni and friends of UL. Participate, celebrate, get to know your fellow students and let “Aristotle” become the first big adventure of your study journey!

Follow the latest information about “Aristotle” on the social media channels of UL Student Council, as well as aristotelis.lv.

Student and Career Day

Student and Career Day takes place in early September, when newly enrolled and current UL students gather at the UL Academic Centre in Torņakalns to get acquainted with the UL offer to its students – it includes master classes on stress management, as well as informative stands and presentations on scholarships, extracurricular activities and ways to actively participate in the life of UL. If you think it is time to think purposefully about your future career, then you can obtain answers to many of your questions by visiting the stalls of companies representing various industries.

Coat of Arms Day – November 11

Since 2024, the University has had its own, state-approved heraldic coat of arms, designed in accordance with European heraldry traditions. Its base is a shield, the centre holds the historical symbol of the University of Latvia – an oak tree with 12 branches, above it – an open book as a symbol of knowledge. The three golden stars in the coat of arms convey the symbols of the three historical regions depicted in the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia.

Anniversary of UL Foundation – September 28

Every year, in the last week of September, the UL community celebrates the foundation anniversary of the University with festive events, exhibitions, concerts and ceremonies. The international Researchers’ Night is held during the university’s anniversary week, and the festivities are concluded by the Academic Ball in classical traditions, attended by UL employees, students and invited guests.

Student self-government elections

Every year in the second week of November, UL students elect faculty self-governments, which are responsible for representing student interests at the faculty level. Any UL student can run for office in the elections, and the UL Student Council Election Commission is responsible for organizing the elections. All current information about the elections can be found on the UL Student Council website.

Graduation ceremonies

At the end of each academic year, graduation ceremonies for students completing their programmes are held in the Great Hall of UL. The graduation of each study programme is organised by its respective faculty. The graduates are awarded their diplomas, and the most outstanding students are particularly honoured. By the way, there is a belief that if you climb the middle part of the entrance stairs of the UL main building before receiving your diploma, the failure in final examinations is imminent! There is no irrefutable evidence as to veracity of this belief, but for safety reasons, we recommend that you use these stairs only after successful graduation from the University.
