The University of Latvia offers a dynamic, diverse, and internationally recognized research environment, engaging more than 1,300 academic staff members.
Research at the University covers nearly all fields of science — from the humanities and social sciences to life sciences, natural sciences, and medicine. The University closely collaborates with partners in academia, government institutions, and the private sector, both nationally and internationally. This extensive cooperation enhances the development and impact of science, resulting in the publication of more than 3,000 scientific contributions annually. Moreover, the University secures research funding through competitive grants — both domestic and international — that is four times greater than the core funding provided by the state.
Research at the University of Latvia is driven by societal needs, promoting innovation, sustainable development, and evidence-based policymaking.
The University's achievements have been recognized in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, particularly in SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). We continue to foster an environment where research is closely aligned with international standards, academic freedom, and the goal of sustainable development for both Latvia and the global community.
We believe that the path to research excellence begins with fair, responsible, and content-driven evaluation of research. Therefore, the University of Latvia has joined two leading international initiatives: the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) and the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). Additionally, we have begun the process to obtain the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research award.
