Open Science is a global movement dedicated to making scientific research and its results accessible to everyone. It emphasizes openness, transparency, and collaboration throughout the research process. This includes every stage from idea generation and data collection to publication and dissemination.
Open science promotes the free flow of knowledge, accelerates scientific progress, and increases the impact of research. Public funding is one of the main driving forces – researchers whose work is funded by taxpayers are increasingly being asked to publish their results in open access.
In 2022, UL introduced its first “Open Science Policy”, and in 2025 developed a new, more concise policy document that sets out the basic principles for the open sharing of publications, data, and software, following the principle of “open as much as possible, closed as necessary”.
