On 12 May 2025, the University of Latvia (UL) Council passed a decision to include the BA School of Business and Finance (BA) as a business school – a separate institution – in the University of Latvia. Implementing the consolidation plan of the two higher education institutions approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on 23 May 2023, BA officially joined the UL community, becoming the business school of the largest university in Latvia.

“The University of Latvia is the leading university in Latvia in social sciences, including economics and entrepreneurship, therefore the inclusion of the BA School of Business and Finance in the UL ecosystem is a forthright development. At the same time, it is an opportunity for UL to become the leading player in business education in the Baltics and a driving force in Latvia’s economic transformation,” emphasizes UL Rector Prof. Gundars Bērziņš.

The future development strategy of BA envisages evolvement into a Baltic-scale business school, promoting the quality of studies and the new research directions, as well as offering internationally accredited study programmes in the field of financial technology – fintech.

“BA is part of the financial industry ecosystem, we prepare sought-after and well-remunerated experts in the management and finance sectors. Joining the University of Latvia community enables BA to take the next step in development and advance international competitiveness of our financial education programmes, for which we have the required knowledge and now – the capacity,” says BA Rector Prof. Līga Peiseniece.

Integration into UL will not affect the current study programmes at BA and agreements concluded with students. Joining UL ecosystem, BA will maintain its competitive study programmes and create new interdisciplinary study programmes as a platform for digital solutions and international development.

Entry of BA into the structure of UL is part of the higher education reform, which aims to strengthen scientific capacity and improve the quality of education. Combining the knowledge of the financial education niche with the broad academic environment of UL, a synergy will be created that will provide students with even more extensive growth opportunities both in Latvia and internationally.

In the academic year 2025/2026, student admission to both higher education institutions will still take place separately, as before, using the single application system on the Latvija.lv portal. BA as a business school within UL will begin its work on 1 September 2025.

UL consistently retains the position of the leading and most influential higher education institution in Latvia, with a significant role in the development of the entire education system and the overall economic growth of the country. UL is the largest higher education institution in Latvia with more than 15 000 students acquiring humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, exact sciences, life sciences, and technology in six faculties.

BA is a state-founded and internationally recognized higher education institution, one of the most widely recognised business schools in Latvia for more than 30 years. BA currently implements 12 accredited professional higher education study programmes in business management and financial education at all study levels in Latvian and English languages. BA has provided the Latvian economy with more than 12 000 graduates, many of whom are heads of companies and industry experts widely recognized in Latvia and Europe.

The consolidation process is taking place within the Recovery and Resilience Facility-supported project “Internal and External Consolidation of the University of Latvia” (No. 5.2.1.1.i.0/2/24/I/CFLA/007).
