As October begins, the University of Latvia (UL) traditionally kicks off its annual sports leagues, where students compete throughout the year for championship titles. The UL Volleyball League will start on October 6, the UL Indoor Football League on October 8, and this year, thanks to a special new initiative, the basketball league has become an inter-university tournament, where students from several of Latvia’s major universities will compete, with games starting on October 7.

UL students, faculty, and staff are offered a wide range of sports opportunities, with the three leagues – basketball, volleyball, and futsal football – taking center stage. These leagues not only promote an active and healthy lifestyle but also provide a regular opportunity to improve athletic skills by playing one to three times per week. Each league features a regular season, with playoffs in April and May to determine the best teams and outstanding individual players.

The Volleyball League follows the classic six-on-six format – a perfect chance to compete while enjoying the volleyball atmosphere. Games will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 20:00 to 22:00 at UL Riga 1st Medical College, Tomsona Street 37. Read more about the Volleyball League here.

The Futsal Football League will be played in a dynamic five-on-five plus goalkeeper format, offering exciting matches and a great opportunity for football enthusiasts to test their skills. Games are scheduled for Wednesdays from 21:00 to 23:00 and Thursdays from 19:30 to 21:00 at Skanstes Street 43. You can find the rules and more information about the Football League here.

This year, the Basketball League has grown even bigger – thanks to high interest, the tournament has evolved into an university league, where students from multiple Latvian universities will compete. Games will be played in a five-on-five format, with up to 15 players per team. Matches are scheduled for Tuesday evenings at 21:00 and 22:00 at Skanstes Street 43, as well as Wednesdays at 19:00 and 20:00 at Brīvības Avenue 333. Learn more about the popular Basketball League here.

Registration for all leagues is open until midnight on September 28. To participate, all UL students must purchase a semester sports membership.

If you want to play but haven’t found your team yet, come to the warm-up tournaments – an indoor football tournament will take place on September 24, and a volleyball tournament on September 25 for UL students. These tournaments are a great way to train before the league season and find like-minded teammates to compete with throughout the season. More information and registration for the tournaments can be found alongside the volleyball and football league information.

Get active, improve your health, and make new friends – see you in the UL Sports Leagues!
