First mobility trips and publicity
October 2025 - December 2025
At this stage of the project, I. Mitrofanovs undertook the first planned mobility visits to Estonia, Germany, the USA, and Indonesia. During this period, I. Mitrofanovs participated in several workshops dedicated to GNSS topics, including a big international workshop held in Indonesia and organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in cooperation with the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency and the University of Indonesia, with the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems as a co-organizer. At this workshop, I. Mitrofanovs gave a presentation on the adverse effects of the ionosphere on GNSS measurements and also chaired one of the workshop sessions dedicated to GNSS signal processing. He was also actively involved in a working group together with specialists from India, Japan, Mali, the Philippines, China, and other countries, discussing each country’s challenges and experiences in the field of GNSS usage.
During the mobility visits, experience was gained not only from a scientific research perspective (Tallinn University of Technology, Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu, The University of Alabama, Alabama Cyber Technology and Engineering School, University of Indonesia), but also from a practical and everyday application perspective (Estonian Land Board, Berlin Senate, German Aerospace Center, German Bundeswehr).
During the business trip to the USA, the postdoctoral researcher acquired not only scientific research experience, but also new knowledge on starting and developing entrepreneurship, as well as knowledge on cooperation with U.S. companies and investors. Particularly valuable were meetings with the Mayor of Huntsville and with assistants to senators from the states of Alabama and Illinois, providing knowledge and understanding of how to plan and implement cooperation at the governmental level in the field of research.
At this stage of the project implementation, I. Mitrofanovs also introduced the project’s goals and objectives to the general public in Latvia by participating in the European Researchers’ Night and the “Night of Legends” event at Dundaga Castle. A brief overview of the importance of GNSS in modern life was also presented in the Radio NABA program “Zinātnes Vārdā” (“In the Name of Science”), in which I. Mitrofanovs participated together with his colleague Inese Vārna.
I. Mitrofanovs also shared the acquired knowledge by participating in a series of civil–military cooperation promotion seminars organized by the Latvian Security and Defence Industries Federation. On 27 October 2025, I. Mitrofanovs took part in a discussion group dedicated to cybersecurity and space capability development, which took place at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences.
Work is currently ongoing on organizing further mobility visits, and the initial trips already create anticipation for what lies ahead, as many new insights and contacts have been gained for future work.
