Doubling the performance of the Baldone Schmidt Telescope
During the project a second large-field CCD camera of the latest prototype was installed in the main focus of the telescope (2024), with the aim of doubling the size of the simultaneously observed area of the sky, ensuring the double observation performance of the telescope. Already with the currently existing camera in the observatory (2021), it has been possible to discover 149 new asteroids, including those dangerous to the Earth, as well as to give them names associated with Latvian scientists, thus popularizing Latvia in the world. For example, in the spring of 2022, the working group of the International Astronomical Union approved the name "Latuni" in honor of the University of Latvia for one of the asteroids discovered in Baldone, at the suggestion of the observatory's staff, thus praising the LU's contribution to the forging of young specialists, including in astronomy.
