In 2010, a planetarium and public observatory were opened in the Ventspils Jaunrades nams (Ventspils House of Creativity). On the 8-meter diameter dome of the planetarium, starry sky scenes and popular science 360-degree films are demonstrated with a digital projector. Younger viewers are delighted with educational cartoon films. The session lasts 35–45 minutes, several sessions are held per day. Astronomy lectures with visualization on the planetarium dome are available to visitors of all age groups.
The observatory dome with a diameter of 5 meters has a Meade telescope with a mirror diameter of 30.5 cm. During the day, in good weather conditions, solar observations are offered. From the end of October to the end of March, the observatory is also open on clear evenings. Then it is possible to view the Moon, planets, stars and deep sky objects through the telescope. Events dedicated to significant astronomical events are also held.
