The projects of fundamental and applied research programs have been launched

The Latvian Science Council has defined four fundamental values in its strategy. They are quality, independence, responsibility and impartiality. Thus, a new framework for the fundamental and applied research contest was created to give scientists maximum freedom in their scientific creativity and planning of projects. Projects are objectively evaluated by international experts who have a great deal of research experience and no conflict of interest. The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia submitted totally 24 project applications, of which 6 applications were approved for funding: 5 approved in Natural Sciences and 1 project in Engineering Sciences and Technology, in the field of Material Sciences. The project implementation time is 36 months in the period 2018-2021. Implementers of approved projects include both experienced scientists and students of doctoral and bachelor's programs. By implementing projects, it is planned to strengthen the scientific capacity of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia by creating the knowledge base and human resource capital, as well as developing the materials used in the study process. For example, as a result of one project, new knowledge will be acquired about fluorescent mechanisms in the field of Material Sciences, as well as the development of new perspective dosimetric materials will be promoted. While another project that represents the Natural Science will develop a methodology for the extraction of nano-structured carbon materials (multifilament graphon and alkali-activated charcoal, kraft-lignins, wastewater sludge from a powder plant), nitrogen-based doping etc. For more information on each project, please see The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia website under Grants. The program of fundamental and applied research is funded by the Ministry of Education and Science. This scientific funding program is focused on scientific excellence with the aim of developing new knowledge and technological know-how in all fields of science.
