On 8 May, experts from the Gender Equality Division of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health of Finland visited the Centre for Gender Studies at the Humanities Faculty

On 8 May, experts from the Gender Equality Division of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health of Finland visited the Centre for Gender Studies at the Humanities Faculty. The thematic focus of the meeting was the implementation of gender equality policies and institutionalization of gender studies in Latvia and in the Baltic Sea region.
Finnish experts were interested in a variety of gender equality issues and policies, such as mechanisms for women's protection against violence, gender inequality in the labour market, rights of sexual minorities in Latvia, integration of gender equality principles of gender equality at the academy, institutionalisation of gender studies, etc. The second part of the meeting was devoted to 1) the discussion of the concept "gender" and the ways of its translation and use in the Latvian language, 2) the ratification process of the Istanbul Convention in Latvia.
The experts in the fields of gender equality policies and gender studies - prof. Irina Novikova (Director of the Centre), Assoc. prof. Aivita Putnina (Cultural and Social Anthropology), doc. Marita Zitmane (Media and Communications Theory) - emphasized the importance of an integrated approach to gender equality policies and gender mainstreaming in Latvia - a movement from formal equality to practical equality should be actively mainstreamed into political, social and academic agendas of the Latvian society.
The director of the Centre informed the Finnish colleagues on a variety of the activities, projects and publications of the unit, including the current publication project Gender and Translation. Finnish colleagues, in turn, focused on analyzing the current situation  with gender equality policies and gender studies in Finland as well as in the Nordic region.
Dr. Maria Semjonova, the Center’s researcher, told our Finnish guests about her postdoctoral project on gender and diaspora in digital space, and about her monograph (2016) on comparative history of Latvian and Finnish women’s writing.
