Faculty of Law becomes an Institutional Observer of the European Law Institute

In September, 2018 the University of Latvia (UL) hosted one of the most important legal forums in the European Union– the annual conference of the European Law Institute (ELI), which gathered more than 400 legal professionals. Following the conference, UL received an invitation to join the members of ELI and has now become an Institutional Observer of the organisation. "Hundred years ago the UL Faculty of Law (FL) was built up in the spirit of European traditions and values. Up until now the Faculty has been working vigorously to continue the work of our founders, developing legal science in Latvia, serving for the needs of Latvia and its people, in the meantime always looking for new challenges internationally," explains the Dean of the UL FL, Associate Professor Anita Rodiņa. "Involvement in ELI opens a lot of opportunities on collaboration and implementation of different-level projects, further integration and involvement in the European legal environment
Participants of the Jessup Baltic Cup will dispute before the International Court of Justice

The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition Baltic Cup 2012 will take place in the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia on 24th and 25th February. Although the competition will be held in the Baltic region, law students from all across Europe are welcomed to participate as well. The Jessup Competition is the world's largest and most renowned moot court competition with a history of over a half century. The first competition was held at Harvard University (USA) by international public law enthusiasts. Now, the court competition gathers participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries. After the national and regional selections teams will earn the rights to participate in the international rounds in Washington D.C., USA.Last year the International Law Students Association delegated organization of the Baltic Cup to the University of Latvia - Student Council of the Faculty of Law. UL students perform well at the Regional Rounds of the Price Media Moot

In December 2018 the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition team of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia (UL) travelled to Kiev, Ukraine to participate in the competition’s North-East European regional rounds, returning home with the prize for Best Memorials and a ticket to the final rounds in Oxford in April 2019. The members of this year’s team are bachelor level students from the UL Faculty of Law: Anna Patrīcija Mālere, Gunvaldis Leitens, Ieva Šņepste and Maira Pužule, coached by associate professor Artūrs Kučs and a member of last year’s team – Emīls Jonins.This year’s Competition Case concerns the widely debated and growing problem of fake news and hate speech online. On June 15, the law firm“SkrastiņšunDzenis”presents 27 copies of books to the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.Books “Comments on the Civil Procedure Law. From 20 to 26 March, the 52nd Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition was held in Washington D.C. (USA). The Competition is organized yearly by the International Law Students Association (ILSA). This year, Latvia was represented by the UL Faculty of Law Team. The Team members were: Reinis Odiņš and Vladlena Rudusāne, the sixth place winners of the European Law Moot Court Competition 2010, Mārtiņš Dambergs, who placed second together with his teammates in the Central and East European (European Law) Moot Competition 2010, and Anastasija Zankoviča. Vladlena Rudusāne is a third year student of BA study programme, while the rest of the Team are first year students of MA study programme.Overall, approximately 650 universities from around the world participated in the Competition, yet only about 120 teams representing eighty countries advanced to the international rounds in Washington. Ever since it's founding in 1919, University of Latvia (UL) Faculty of Law (FL) has been known as one of the largest forges of lawyers in Latvia. Both long-term UL patrons and the Faculty of Law graduates, as well as partners in collaboration with the UL Foundation support the traditions of the UL FL by organizing an extensive international scientific conference to celebrate the centenary of the faculty. Marking the 100 th anniversary since establishment of UL Faculty of Law, the 7 th International Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia Faculty of Law "Legal Science: Functions, Significance and Future in Legal Systems I" took place in Riga from the 16 th to 18 th of October. The conference honoured both the significant anniversary of studies and research in Latvian legal studies, and the contribution brought by the faculty to development and renewal of our country’s national legal system.
