University of Latvia, Institute of Chemical Physics opens a PhD position in the field of experimental condensed matter physics within participation in EU FET project “High Frequency Topological Insulator devices for Metrology (HiTIMe)”


Topological Insulators are a class of materials that present a novel state of matter, characterized by an insulating bulk and metallic surface states. Unique properties of TIs surfaces are a key ingredient in application for quantum computing and new generation of metrology devices, as well as to improve a thermoelectric efficiency of material.

The aim of HiTIMe is to investigate the high-frequency properties of topological insulator based devices and to demonstrate their application in metrology. In the project, a topologic insulator nanomaterial design and synthesis will be combined with a nanofabrication, comprehensive transport measurements, microwave spectroscopy, scanning probe techniques and theoretical modelling. The research will be carried out in the international environment, in a close cooperation of the Institute of Chemical Physics, University of Latvia; Chalmers Technological University in Gothenburg, Sweden; National Physics Laboratory, United Kingdom; Negev Ben-Gurion University, Israel.

Successful PhD candidade will work in a close collaboration between University of Latvia (Latvia) - Topological insulator nanometrial growth and expertise and Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) - Nanofabrication at cleanroom environment, low temperature measuements.




  • Master degree in chemistry or physics
  • Hands – on experience in experimental work (preferably with a focus on nanofabrication and charge transport characterization)
  • Affinity for practical work
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Interest learning nanofabrication and experimental techniques of low temperature measurements
  • Initiative in interpretation of scientific data
