Course abstract:
The study course is designed to acquaint the Latvian language and literature teachers with the experience that has been accumulated in the contemporary linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and linguo-didactics regarding the interrelations between the language and the speech, the issues of ethnolinguistics and the Latvian ethnogenesis, the particularity of developing a functional grammar teaching content, as well as applying communicative and culturological approach in language teaching, about the possibilities of usage of the latest opinions in mastering the Latvian language in a vocational education institution in monolingual and bilingual audiences.

Course abstract:
The course aims at creation of understanding and providing knowledge of the newest trends in the development of higher education systems in Europe and to develop the necessary competencies to implement the ongoing reforms in Latvia and in Europe at higher education institution and programme level. Participants will be introduced with the paradigm shift in higher education and their professional development need, development and innovation in the teaching and learning in higher education in the context of the Bologna process. With a view of reaching the above goals participants first get acquainted with the main features of higher education systems in Europe and the world, their commonalities and differences, moving on to the reasons for a common higher education policies in Europe and its main contents. These include the main aspects of the Bologna process the move to three-cycle system, qualification transparency instruments and the principles of mutual recognition of qualifications, approaches and methodologies of quality assurance, formulation of learning outcomes and creation of qualifications frameworks as well as the impact of emergence of European common labour market to higher education, in particular in the lifelong learning context.

Course abstract:
The course is one of the modules of a program “Teaching and learning for competence development” that is grounded in research-based ideas and practice. The course is intended for pedagogues representing different subject areas in comprehensive education. Upon completion of this course, participants will broaden their understanding on what kind of student learning process the result is student’s competence and how to realize such a learning process in specific classroom setting. During course lessons, participants will have a chance to analyse different teaching situations, lesson plan examples, do methodical assignments, engage in professional experience exchange on teaching and assessment possibilities that are aimed at learning for competence development. In between lessons there will be an individual assignment.

The course is designed to offer teachers the opportunity to develop their professional competence for effective schooling by revealing benefits and challenges of trialogical learning. Course abstract:
The aim of the course is to give university faculty possibility to get to know and apply Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Task Based Teaching (TBT) to develop and improve skills and knowledge of the English language for academic purposes. The course introduces approaches to language learning and teaching. University faculty learn by doing as the language skills are integrated – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. University faculty are encouraged to complete various tasks thus applying the gained knowledge and skills in their academic field. The objectives of the course: 1)to give university faculty possibility to learn about CLIL and TBT as well as develop skills of integrating these approaches to plan lectures and seminars; 2) to apply CLIL and TBT strategies to learn English vocabulary for academic purposes as well as to help improve skills of reading authentic academic English texts – understand and analyse authentic texts; 3)to plan and analyse TBL planning framework and apply it to design presentations as well as learn vocabulary related to presenting scientific research; 4)to plan and design CLIL activities aimed to improve writing skills – summarising, paraphrasing, writing reviews, reports, articles, abstracts; 5)to apply CLIL and TBT strategies in planning improvement of communication skills in academic discourse.
