Course abstract:
The target of study course is to give the opportunity for students to analyze the theoretical basis of the civic education, changes in approach and implementation experience in the EU and in the world, to promote students' awareness of the civic education as a key competence in contemporary educational process, as well as to present the methodological techniques of the civic engagement and civic attitudes in schools, and to reflect on the consequences for the pupils' personal and civic growth.

Course abstract:
The purpose of the course is to provide and promote students’ understanding, refine a knowledge, facilitate skills and attitude on civil protection issues. Course examines the role of civil protection system in Latvia (also its framework in the EU and NATO), the organization and management structure, and main tasks of the system’s subjects. The course explores the disaster management principles and planning aspects, analyses the legal and practical measures of cooperation among state, local government and other stakeholders during disaster situations, opportunities of involvement of resources. Course gives an insight on possible daily dangerous situations and threats, considers and provides safe behaviour principles and actions during such situations. The course describes the role, aim and task of early warning and notification system. The course ensures that students are familiar and aware about the role of media (social networks) and its impact on information dissemination during the emergency situations and disasters. Course ensures that students obtain general knowledge on disaster medical system and the role of first aid. The course is developed in accordance to national legislation prescribed for minimum requirements for the content of civil protection course.

Course abstract:
The course aims are to provide knowledge about climate change and reducing its negative effects, as well as about adaptation process and its management, the use of modern management approaches, methods and tools. The course will form students' ability to apply the acquired knowledge to engage in climate management implementation at different levels. The acquired knowledge on the greenhouse gas emissions reduction and adaptation strategies will create preconditions for the feasibility of different program or plan preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of climate change. The theoretical aspects will be interacting with case studies from both the literature (national and local climate change strategies, programs and plans) and lecturers experience from practice. It will give for students the opportunity to become aware of the importance of climate change and search solutions needed. Student permanent employment will provide in-depth knowledge and the basis for their practical application.

Course abstract:
The course is one of the modules of a program “Teaching and learning for competence development” that is grounded in research-based ideas and practice. The course is intended for pedagogues representing different subject areas in comprehensive education. During course lessons, participants will have a chance to analyse different teaching situations, lesson plan examples, do methodical assignments, engage in professional experience exchange on what is the way to a complex student learning outcome and how to evaluate it. Participants will be able to practice the use and development of rubrics. In between lessons there will be an individual assignment.
