Course abstract:
The objective of the course is to provide an insight and knowledge about the EU development issues and priorities of the European Commission (EC) (including investment plan, energy union and climate change policy, digital single market, enhanced internal market with a more robust industrial base, advanced economic and monetary union) by focussing on the principles of EU finance management and its role in ensuring functioning of the EU. The course specifically aims at providing knowledge on financial instruments of the European Commission (structural funds, European Strategic Investment Fund, etc.) institutional finance framework (European budget, European stabilization mechanism, EIB) and its interaction with the financial markets and international financial institutions (IMF, World Bank). Information on EC working methods will also be provided (European Semester, EC annual work programme, etc.).

Course abstract:
Study course aims to provide students with the knowledge and practical analysis experience in the field of European Union (EU) public diplomacy. In order to achieve this goal, students are introduced to the EU and world history of public diplomacy, paying specific attention to the changing role and identity of the EU on the international arena. Students learn about key EU public diplomacy mechanisms, analyzing their efficiency from both theoretical and practical perspectives, while training to distinguish, evaluate and contribute to EU public diplomacy strategies designed and directed towards the EU external relations. Individual assignments in form of essays, as well as seminar discussions, group works and presentations compose the practical part of the course.

Course abstract:
The course gives theoretical knowledge on European environmental policy and scientific support for its development and implementation. The course examines the main themes of environment policy: water, air, soil, biological diversity, climate change, environmental noise, and chemicals. The course is designed to link environmental problems and their solutions with the environmental policy and its instruments, understanding the role of science in policy development and environmental problem solving. Each topic is covered in the following order: •Environmental problem and its solution (15%); •Environmental policy – main legislative acts (20%); •Scientific support to environmental policy (50%); •Environmental policy implementation and evaluation of the results (20%). In the end of the course a student has to draft a project proposal: •Selecting environmental problem and the possible solutions; •Analysing the gaps of the environemental policy related to this problem; •Preparing the project proposal to resolve these gaps .

Course abstract:
The aim of the course is to introduce participants with the notion of europeanization, its manifestation in different EU policies. During the course participants will receive information about the logic of EU enlargement, its patterns, and policies applied by the candidate countries in order to adapt to transformation. Participants of the course should be able to analyse and asses achievements and failures of europeanization in different countries. Theoretical knowledge will be applied in seminars and discussion taking place in governmental and non-governmental institutions in Latvia.
