Course abstract:
The course aims at creation of understanding and providing knowledge of the newest trends in the development of higher education systems in Europe and to develop the necessary competencies to implement the ongoing reforms in Latvia and in Europe at higher education institution and programme level. Participants will be introduced with the paradigm shift in higher education and their professional development need, development and innovation in the teaching and learning in higher education in the context of the Bologna process. With a view of reaching the above goals participants first get acquainted with the main features of higher education systems in Europe and the world, their commonalities and differences, moving on to the reasons for a common higher education policies in Europe and its main contents. These include the main aspects of the Bologna process the move to three-cycle system, qualification transparency instruments and the principles of mutual recognition of qualifications, approaches and methodologies of quality assurance, formulation of learning outcomes and creation of qualifications frameworks as well as the impact of emergence of European common labour market to higher education, in particular in the lifelong learning context.

This course provides opportunities to develop understanding of quality in education in the context of organizational culture, mainly in the sphere of tertiary education. The offered practical activities aim at the development of skills to distinguish between the quality criteria and their practical application, as well as enrich the experience in using different approaches of quality evaluation and formation of internal quality culture. The theoretical part of the course offers analysis of the main notions related to quality assurance and evaluation, as well as the conditions which denote internal quality culture. Course abstract:
The aim of the course is to offer the educators an opportunity to develop their understanding of the essence of teaching-learning as a process, its regularities, theories of teaching-learning and didactics. The classes introduce models of teaching-learnng, pedagogical reasoning of their targeted choice. The course offers an opportunity to the participants develop their competence to develop study courses and programmes, analyse pedagogical situations in higher education, identify students’ needs and select adequate theoretical approach and models of teaching-learning to initiate students learning activities. Practical classes will offer the participants patterns of didactical modelling and initiate their original theoretically and practically appropriate creating of models.

Course abstract:
The aim of the course is to deepen participants’ knowledge of the essence of communication in tertiary teaching and learning, to analyze current scientific literature and one’s own professional action, and to apply the new ideas in planning, leading and assessing the process of teaching and learning and promoting one’s own professional growth. Special attention is paid to psychological aspects of tertiary teaching and learning, to the essence and functions of pedagogical communication and possibilities of its enhancement. Educators’ personality is looked upon as a promoter of achievement of course goals. In theoretical classes newest scientific ideas of specifics of communication in nowadays teaching and learning, educators’ psychological-pedagogical competence, features of students’ personalities and opportunities of enhancing pedagogical communication are analyzed. In seminars and practical classes educators work on their skills of communication, cooperation, assessment and discussion of scientific ideas and one’s professional action, and presentation skills. At the end of the course the educators present their point of view on possibilities to promote communication in tertiary teaching and learning.
