  • Call for Papers: the 2nd "Queer Narratives in European Cultures 2018" 15.01.2018

    The second edition of the international conference „Queer Narratives in European Cultures” invites scholars from various fields of humanities who deal with LGBTI history and queer theory. The conference will be focused on the region of the Baltic States and their neighboring countries – the region of East and Central Europe where LGBTI and queer studies are still an emerging discipline. Due to the historical conditions and the post-socialist legacy, LGBTI activism and scholarship of gay and lesbian history of the region has developed almost simultaneously with queer theory and its politics of difference and anti-representation. The conference will focus on both of these divisions, serving as a meeting point for scholars of different backgrounds and disciplines.

  • Microsoft concludes cooperation agreement with an international venture capital fund; through the Innovation Center framework

    Microsoft and Blue Dome Capital Limited (Blue Dome), the investment manager of an Ireland based venture capital fund, signed a cooperation agreement in the sphere of technology innovation, through the framework of the University of Latvia and Microsoft Innovation Center. Therefore Latvia becomes the first one of the three Baltic States in which the fund will be operating and will actively seek investments.

    Are there situations when personal engagement can get in the way of truthful reporting? To whom the folklorist should be responsible more – the scholarly truth or the informant? What are the researchers’ responsibilities to those being studied? Are there any fields of research too sensitive and ethically too difficult to be addressed at all? What are the principles of ethically correct work with archived material and its representation in the digital tradition archives? What are the new ethical challenges introduced by the Digital Age? How the research is going to affect the lives of informants and should such influence be exerted by the results of the research? Can researchers have too much empathy? Some questions regarding the ethics in folkloristics might never be answered, but nevertheless: with this conference we would like the young folklorists to join the international debate.

    On September 27th, at the Academic centre of the University of Latvia (ACUL) in Torņakalns, a foundation stone with a time capsule – a message to future generations – was laid into the foundation of the House of Science. The time capsule also contains an issue of the magazine Alma Mater that describes the building and its significance.

  • UL computing study programmes re-accredited in Latvia and Europe

    The re-accreditation process of the study programmes for the University of Latvia (UL) Faculty of Computing is completed and all of the Faculty’s study programmes have been re-accredited until 2023. The bachelor's and master’s degree study programmes are re-accredited by the EU standards and hold the Euro-Inf Quality Label since 2012.

  • Latvian-Spanish bilingual publication of epic poem “Lāčplēsis” aspires to strengthen the relationship between both cultures

    The first Spanish translation of the Latvian literature classic – the epic poem “Lāčplēsis” (“The Bear Slayer”) by Andrejs Pumpurs, has been published. It is a bilingual Latvian-Spanish publication with comments about development of epic poetry genre and the eminence of the main character – Lāčplēsis – in the Latvian culture. The publisher is the University of Latvia Press.

    On Friday, November 10, the Rector of the University of Latvia (UL), Prof. Indriķis Muižnieks and the Rector of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) Remigijus Žaliūnas signed a memorandum of cooperation, which contributes to a stronger partnership, particularly in cardiology.

    UL and CFCA concludes an agreement for implementation of ERDF projects for research and modernization of the study infrastructure

    On Friday, November 10, at the University of Latvia Academic Centre, Nature House, the UL Rector Indriķis Muižnieks un Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFCA) Director Anita Krūmiņa signed an agreement that will ensure implementation of two European Regional Development Fund's (ERDF) projects, assigning 41.9 million euro for modernization of UL research and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) study infrastructure.

    In 2009, the UNESCO Memory of the World programme’s Latvian National Register was established to study and popularize Latvian documentary heritage. This autumn, four nominations have been added to the register, and they will supplement to the Latvian documentary heritage for the future generations. The University of Latvia Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art (LFMI) Archives of Latvian Folklore nomination “Archives of Latvian Folklore phonograph cylinder collection” is one of these.

    J. C. Brotze’s collection at UL Academic Library is nominated for UNESCO Memory of the World Latvian National Register

    For the first time, a heritage belonging to the University of Latvia (UL) – Johann Christoph Brotze’s collection has been nominated for UNESCO National Register the . Notably, the Cabinet of Folksongs (Dainu Skapis), included in the International Register of the UNESCO programme Memory of the World in 2001, is also under the aegis of the UL.

  • Guntis Endzels nominated for the best coach award in Latvia, supporters' voting is open

    The Latvian Basketball Association has opened voting for the best sports representatives of 2017, including the nomination of “Coach of the Year”. One of the five nominees is the Head Coach of the University of Latvia (UL) men’s basketball team Guntis Endzels, who has lead the team to the historical bronze medals in the 29th Summer Universiade this year. Until October 31, the supporters of each nominee can cast their vote once a day.

    The prestigious QS University Rankings show that the University of Latvia (UL) showed a performance, which placed it among the top 1.5 % higher education institutions in EECA region, ranking 44th rank and becoming the only university in Latvia to reach TOP 50.

  • Let’s view the sky through telescope

    On October 5, 2017, the University of Latvia Astronomical Tower, which works under the auspices of the Museum of History of Science and Technology, started its 32nd demonstration season. Since restoration of the tower access, more than 10 000 people have looked through the tower’s telescope. It is planned that this season will gather more visitors, because the tower is open two evenings a week

  • Best European experts to participate at International Conference in Pharmacology

    October 19–20, the 2nd International Conference in Pharmacology “From Cellular Processes to Drug Targets” will take place at the University of Latvia (UL) Academic Centre of Natural Sciences, bringing together lecturers from Slovenia, USA, Lithuania, Germany, Great Britain, Estonia, and Latvia. The conference is organized by the Department of Pharmacology of the UL Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis and Latvian Society of Pharmacology.

    University of Latvia (UL) invites to register for the 12th International Symposium of Cognition, Logic and Communication “Impact of Visuospatial Skills on Learning” which will take place from October 31 to November 1. World-class experts will present their papers during symposium – prof. David Uttal (Cognitive Sciences, Psychology, Northwestern University, USA) and prof. Bob Coecke (Computer Science, Oxford University; UK), and prof. Mike Stieff (Learning Sciences, University of Illinois-Chicago, IL, USA).     Rector of UL Indriķis Muižnieks at Ceremonial Senate meeting: We have changed this year

    Thursday, September 28, on the 98th anniversary of the University of Latvia (UL) the Ceremonial Senate meeting took place in the Great Hall of the UL. Three Honorary Doctorates were presented and 54 new doctorate degrees awarded in the Conferment Ceremony. The Rector of the UL, Prof. Indriķis Muižnieks stated that the University has changed this year.

    “Latvijas Pasts” has issued a postage stamp and cover dedicated to the Academic Centre for Natural Sciences of the University of Latvia (UL). The cancellation of the stamp is going to take place in the Small Hall of the UL, Raiņa bulvāris 19, at 11:30 on September 28, coinciding with the celebration of the 98th anniversary of the UL.

    The University of Latvia (UL) has been included in the QS Graduate Employability Ranking 2018, taking the 251–300th place in the university group.

    In collaboration with the University of Latvia has been opened the first Microsoft Innovation Centre in Baltic countries and Northern Europe

    In mid-September, attended by the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis, an opening ceremony was held for the University of Latvia and Microsoft Innovation Centre – the first technological innovation platform of its kind in the region of Baltic countries and Northern Europe. Objective of this centre is to strengthen the cooperation between partners of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) industry, science, non-governmental organisations and public sector, development of export capable IT solutions and digital transformation within Latvia.

    336 exchange students have begun their studies in the University of Latvia

    336 exchange students have begun their studies in the University of Latvia (UL) in the autumn semester of 2017, from which 69 will continue their studies in the university for the whole academic year, informs Ieva Ģerģe, the international coordinator from the International Mobility Unit.

    From August 21, 2017 till August 23, 2017 two representatives of the University of Latvia together with partners from Europe and Africa participated in training seminar “Teacher training – Constructive Alignment” which was organised within the Erasmus+ project “International Diploma for School Teachers in STEM Education / eSTEM” (activity 2: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices – Capacity building in higher education) at Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt).
