Since its foundation in 1920 (when the Department of Baltistics was set up with an aim of introducing students to the history, literature and culture of the Baltic languages - Latvian, Lithuanian, Prussian), the department has seen various structural changes. Currently it includes the Chair of Latvian and General Linguistics, the Chair of Baltic Linguistics, the Chair of Latvian Literary History and Theory, the Chair of Folkloristics and Ethnology and the Chair of Theatre and Cinema History and Theory.

Within the discipline and subdisciplines, the Department implements academic and professional study programmes. The purpose of the department is to prepare qualified researchers, academics and professionals to meet the demands of the society in the field of linguistics (Latvian and Baltic linguistics), literary studies (Latvian literary history, literary theory and comparative literary studies), folkloristics (incl. ethnology), art (theory and history of theatre and cinema) and in cultural anthropology.
