Human and animal physiology is a field of natural sciences studying the essentials of various biological processes and their expression in a living organism and in the interaction between an organism and environment as well as mechanisms and possibilities of adaptive changes of physiological functions.

Studies and research work in the field of human and animal anatomy and physiology began at the University of Latvia already in the first years of it’s grounding. Activities in this field was connected with Institute of Comparative Anatomy and Experimental Zoology grounded 1920. However the Chair of Human and Animal Physiology as independent direction was established 1958.

At the moment research work in the Department performs in some directions:

  • Physiology of blood-vessels and circulation;
  • Exercise physiology;
  • Physiology of energy metabolism in human organism .

Study and research process at the Department is organized in collaboration with physiologists from the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, Institute of Biology, Institute of Cardiology. A successful cooperation has been performed as well with research institution abroad: University of Umea, Department of Integrative Medical Biology (Sweden), Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute in Sydney (Australia),  I.M.Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry in Saint Petersburg (Russia).

Academic staff of the Department insure the lecture courses and practical works both for the students of the Faculty of Biology and the students from other faculties of the University of Latvia: the Faculty of Pedagogy, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Medicine etc.
