The aim of the study programme is to provide professional bachelor's studies in educational sciences, promoting the development of a teacher's general and professional competence in accordance with the professional standard ‘Teacher’ in the student's chosen fields of study.

A unique approach to combine the content and teaching methodologies of two or more subject areas by choosing between several sub-programmes:

  • Latvian Language and Literature teacher (is also implemented in branches)
  • Math teacher
  • Russian Language and Literature teacher (is also implemented in branches)
  • Teacher of Social Sciences and History (is also implemented in branches)

OR

  • English teacher (is also implemented in branches)
  • German language teacher (is also implemented in branches)
  • Computer teacher
  • Design and Technology teacher
  • Science teacher (Biology teacher or Physics teacher or Geography teacher or Chemistry teacher)

By mastering one of the sub-programmes: Teacher of Latvian Language and Literature, Teacher of Math, Teacher of Russian Language and Literature, Teacher of Social Sciences and History, graduates will be competent to teach the content of the module at general, optimal and higher levels according to the national general secondary education standard.*

By entering the study sub-programmes: English Teacher, German Language Teacher, Computer Science Teacher, Design and Technology Teacher, Biology Teacher, Physics Teacher, Geography Teacher, Chemistry Teacher, graduates will be competent to teach module content at general, optimal and higher levels according to national general secondary education standard * and students have the opportunity to acquire the content and methodology of at least two subjects, choosing to obtain one of the various sub-programmess: English teacher; German language teacher; Computer teacher; Design and Technology Teacher; Biology teacher; Teacher of Science and Physics, Teacher of Science and Geography, Teacher of Science and Chemistry; Physics and Chemistry teacher; Geography and Physics teacher; Chemistry and Geography teacher; Math teacher; Latvian as a state language and as a foreign language teacher; Russian as a foreign language teacher, as a result of which graduates will be competent to teach the acquired content at the generallevel in accordance with the state general secondary education standard.*

There is the right to study for a master's degree or second level professional higher education study programmes meant for studies after acquiring a bachelor's degree.

It is possible to return to continue studies for the acquisition of the content and methodology of another subject area or for the acquisition of the content and methodology of the subject area at the highest level.

Job opportunities

There is the right to work in the profession of secondary education teacher and in accordance with the acquired competence to teach the content acquired in the module at general, optimal and higher level in public and private educational institutions: general education schools, vocational education institutions, training centres, interest education institutions, and others.

Full-time – 8 semesters (4 years), 160 CP

Part-time – 9 semesters (4,5 years), 160 CP

 

Tuition fee per year: full-time – 2100 EUR; part-time regular studies – 1700 EUR (including the branches)

General rules

Secondary education

Competition criteria for persons who have acquired secondary education in 2004 and onwards:

  • CE in Latvian
  • CE in English, French, Russian or German
  • CE in Maths *
  • Entrance examination
  • Annual grade of the chosen study field subjects (not lower than 7) **

* For persons who have acquired secondary education before 2008, the centralized examination in maths may be replaced by the annual mark of the secondary education document in mathematics (or the average mark in algebra and geometry).

 Competition criteria for persons who have acquired secondary education before 2004 (excluding), as well as for persons who have acquired secondary education abroad or for persons with special needs:

  • Annual average grade in Latvian Language and Literature
  • Annual grade in English, French, Russian or German
  • Annual grade in mathematics
  • Annual average grade in certain subjects,
  • Entrance examination
  • Annual grade of the chosen study field subjects (not lower than 7) **

** The subjects of the chosen field of study, in which the annual grade must be at least 7, are as follows:

  • English teacher - annual grade in English
  • Science teacher (biology or physics, or geography, or chemistry teacher) - annual grade in Biology or Physics, or Geography, or Chemistry
  • Computer teacher - annual grade in Informatics or Computer Science, or Digital Design, or Robotics, or Programming
  • Design and Technology teacher - annual grade in household or visual arts or computer science
  • Teacher of Russian Language and Literature - annual grade in Russian
  • Teacher of Latvian language and literature - annual grade in Latvian Language and Literature
  • Math teacher - annual grade in mathematics (or average grade in algebra and geometry)
  • Teacher of Social Sciences and History - an annual grade in history
  • German Language teacher - annual grade in German

 

Description of the entrance examination

The entrance examination consists of two parts: the justification for choosing a teaching profession (a written part) 600 points and the justification for choosing a teaching profession (an oral part - interview) 400 points. It is recommended to take certificates (if any are) of previous experience in pedagogical work (work in children's and youth camps, Sunday school, nanny work, etc.), participation in Latvian national or international olympiads and Latvian state student scientific conferences and voluntary work (participation in youth NGOs). , interest-related education (camps, courses, seminars, etc.)).

Choice of teaching profession

justification (a written part)

The candidates answer five questions in a written form within 30 minutes:

• Choice of teaching profession;

• Evaluation of the main goals;

• Assessment of one's skills and abilities;

• Social activities, experience in working with people;

• Research activities and projects.

 

 

0 - 600 points.

 

The committee assesses whether the candidate has provided answers with verification for five entrance examination questions and confirmed the competence in the use of the Latvian language.

Choice of teaching profession

The interview takes place in groups of three candidates - 15 minutes, or in some cases individually - 7 minutes.

The committee asks the candidates about:

• Choice of a study programme;

• Previous learning experience;

• Current issues in education and culture;

• Readiness for studies.

0 – 400 points. 

 The candidate's answers to the questions are evaluated according to the following criteria:

• professional motivation;

• understanding of the study field;

• ability to express oneself;

• communication skills and

  • speech quality.
 

The minimal number of points in the entrance examination for starting studies is 500 points

International student mobility - ERASMUS

Within the programme, students have got the opportunity to study free of charge for one or two semesters in all Member States of European Union, including universities in Denmark, Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Estonia, and Lithuania. Students have got the opportunity to listen to lectures by visiting professors from Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, etc. a country that visits the system of cooperation agreements concluded by the LU PPMF.
