Language and culture contacts
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide the opportunity to acquire knowledge on language and culture encounters, based on the Latvian and, more broadly, the Baltic cultural space. The Baltic cultural space covers the space of languages and cultures that has developed around the Baltic Sea. The course considers three main directions of contacts that have influenced the Latvian culture space: Baltic - Finno-Ugric peoples; Baltic - Slavic; Baltic - German. A systematic overview of each of these directions of interaction is provided, while emphasising some specific points of contact between languages and cultures (Baltics and Slavs in Grodno region, Polesie, Finno-Ugric people in Latgale, Livs of Kurzeme and Vidzeme, Rügen island as an area of contact between Germanic, Slavic, Baltic languages and cultures, etc.). The objectives of the course are: 1. to provide a systematic overview of language and culture contacts in the Baltic space. 2. based on the data obtained in field research

Regional language and culture contacts
Course
The course introduces students to one of the most interesting phenomena - language and cultural contacts in the context of different regions. Language plays an important role in the development of society and culture. The modern linguistic landscape is the result of language interactions and evolution and it is constantly changing and evolving. The students will be introduced to language contact phenomena from diachronic and synchronic perspective. An insight into language policy will also be provided, while analysing its impact on the development of language, culture and society. The course aims at providing students with the opportunity to obtain knowledge of the key interaction processes and their consequences both within diachronic and modern perspectives in the context of different regional languages and cultures. Language contacts in the Baltic Sea region
Course
The aim of the course is to introduce languages spoken in the Baltic sea region and their contact directions, diachronic development, as well as contact areas and their research methods. The task are to get students acquainted with the structural differences of the Circum-Baltic languages, their status and a variety of other properties. They also are introduced to language contact directions in the region as well as main research on language contacts in the Baltic sea region. One of the course objectives is set to provide the students with an opportunity to conduct their own research on languages of the region, which is absolutely essential to stimulate interest and ensure research competence in students, which they could use in the future to continue research into languages and language contacts, as well as use such research in interdisciplinary settings. Russian and Latvian Language Contacts [2]

The course aims at fostering the understanding of diachronic and synchronic perspectives on the Russian and Latvian language contacts. The course focuses on the key issues in contrastive grammar of Russian and Latvian, considers the common and distinctive features of two languages in the field of synchronic phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon and reviews the historical periods of Russian and Latvian language contacts, as well as attends to peculiarities of the Russian language in modern-day Latvia. The course introduces and provides for the discussion of major theoretical considerations in linguistic theory of language contacts. Objectives of the course: 1. To introduce students to the principles and methods of contrastive linguistics and contact linguistics. 2. To introduce students to the fundamentals in the area of the contrastive grammar of Russian and Latvian. 3. To develop skills required for the analysis of language from the perspective of contrastive linguistics

History and Theory of Russian and Latvian Language Contacts
Course
The course aims at surveying the historical periods of Russian language contacts in Latvia, as well as the Russian language in modern-day Latvia. The course analyses the fundamentals of contact linguistics. Likewise, the course characterises the common and distinctive features of both languages in the context of contrastive grammar of Russian and Latvian. Moreover, it focuses on the key issues in the field of two languages contacts from the perspective of historical linguistics and translation. The objectives of the course: 1. to introduce students to the concepts and principles of contact linguistics. 2. to develop skills required for the analysis of language from the perspective of contrastive linguistics and contact linguistics. The language of instruction is Russian.
