Cabinet of Ministers Approves Indriķis Muižnieks as the UL Rector

On Thursday, March 26, in the extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the University of Latvia Professor Indriķis Muižnieks was approved as the rector of the University of Latvia. "My priority is to surmount the new challenges and ensure that studies and research continue in as high a quality as possible in the circumstances of emergency," UL Rector Indriķis Muižnieks told. I.Muižnieks explained that he had extensive plans and assignments, but the prevailing priority at present is overcoming the challenges posed by the Covid-19 disease caused by the coronavirus. In his view, this emergency will teach everyone a great deal and possibly allow for new, more efficient solutions to make processes work better. He also said that despite the adjustments imposed by Covid-19, the university has an ample amount of work, such as updating the UL five-year strategies and continuing the curriculum development plan. Ernest Felsberg (1866-1928) was the first rector of the UL and a professional art historian. In 1920 E. Felsberg started working in the Latvia Higher School (later the University of Latvia) as a professor, but in September of 1920 was nominated as acting rector (he was confirmed in this post in 1922). The professor remained in the position of Rector till summer of 1923. He was a member of Saeima (Parliament of the Republic of Latvia) from 1922 to 1925, and Minister of Education from December 19, 1924 to March 4, 1925. In March of 1928 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of Classical Philology of the University of Latvia. Professor E. Felsberg was also the creator of the exposition of the Art Cabinet collection of UL. Thanks to the enthusiasm and initiative of E. Academic year plan

Academic year in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes consists of 40 weeks divided into autumn and spring semesters. Depending on the study programme, academic year may also include a summer semester up to eight weeks. In these cases, the duration of academic year can be up to 48 weeks. The academic year plan of each academic year is approved by rector (see academic year calendar ).

Graduation ceremonies

As the academic year draws to its close, the UL holds the graduation ceremonies. Traditionally, they take place in the heart of Alma Mater – Aula Magna (the Great Hall), and the Rector of the University presents the diplomas to alumni. Each summer (June and July), in about 40 ceremonies the diplomas of higher education are awarded to several thousand young specialists. Some study programmes conclude with the graduation ceremonies in winter, at the end of the autumn semester, conferring the diplomas to several hundreds of University students. The schedule of graduation ceremonies is published annually in the spring.

be performed by the rector or dean of the institution of higher education, in a college - the college director. The decision on exclusion of a person from the list of students may be contested in accordance with the procedures specified in Section 26, Paragraph eight of this Law. The student is exmatriculated with rector’s order, following the proposal of the dean representing the respective faculty. The student who wishes to be exmatriculated submits an application to the rector. The student can contest the exmatriculation decision within one month from the day when the decision has entered into force, by submitting an application to the UL Senate.
