Competition criteria for persons with an obtained secondary education up to year 2004 (not included) as well as persons who have obtained their secondary education abroad and persons with special needs:
final average grade in Latvian and Literature
final grade in Biology
final grade in Maths (or average grade of Algebra and Geometry) or in Physics, or in Chemistry
final average grade in certain subjects
Special rules: the final grade of Chemistry or Science has to be passable (no lower than 4) in the secondary education document;
Preferential claims: Latvian state or international Biology Olympiad or Latvian state student scientific conference Biology section or health sciences section degree 1 to 3 winners in year 2018 and 2019; LU Young biologist student competition 1st to 3rd place winners in overall standings of grade 12 group on year 2019.

|Programme practical realization||
Throughout the studies different lecturing methods are used: lecture, laboratory works, seminars and discussions, teamwork, student presentations.
In lectures concepts, theories, classification of the particular subbranch of biology is presented. Lecture materials are available in E-studies system. Attendance of lectures is not compulsory but advised.
In laboratories students strengthen theoretical knowledge and obtain basic practical skills. Description of laboratory work and necessary equipment and consumables are provided. Normally laboratories are individual, in complex tasks students can work in pairs or in small groups.
The teamwork approach is widely used in field courses (Field course in ecology I and II, Applied ecology I and II) for solving complex ecological problems. In seminars students obtain experience in presenting their knowledge and in discussions.
Before starting of the particular study course students are introduced to courses in the study guide.
Lecturing is given in Latvian; guest lecturers for providing presentations in English can be invited.
Assessment takes place in accordance with the requirements of University of Latvia. A 10-point marking system is used.
Exams, control work and tests have to be passed individually. During the laboratory and practical exercises, and in preparation of field projects, the students can work in small groups of 2-4 people, in which they prepare reports and protocols together. Bachelor’s Thesis are written and defended individually, although students usually work in a research group during their preparation.
The number of examinations with complex evaluation or with evaluation in written form has increased in the programme. This contributes to standardization of studies and increases the objectivity of the evaluation. Every study course has intermediate evaluations and a final examination. Number of intermediate evaluation depends on the specificity of the course; these evaluations can be written tests (control works), colloquiums, essays, seminars or computer tasks. Students know criteria for evaluation in advance. Regular and multiple evaluations stimulate students to attend lectures and motivate them for in-depth study. Tests include knowledge of facts and ability to logically display processes, and questions from laboratory works and related subjects. Students can receive a specific number of points in tests and thus the evaluation of student achievement is objective.
Laboratory work is also evaluated by marks using a 10-point system and can influence the final evaluation of the student. Alternative evaluation of laboratories also is used, if the work is completed in accordance with the demands.
In order to facilitate the preparation of courses and bachelor's thesis for students, recommendations with participation of academic staff and students have been made.
Yearly programme costs per student correspond to the tuition fee specified above.
