E-courses ValoP179: Practical English Phonetics
Course annotation The aim of the course is to provide knowledge about English sounds and their pronunciation as well as develop students' public presentation skills in English.
Course objectives:
1) to improve language competence and pronunciation through language sound pronunciation exercises;
2) to provide students with opportunities for improving their skills of writing transcription;
3) to facilitate acquisition of poetry and prose;
4) to acquire public presentation skills in Englis.
Results Upon successful completion of the course, students develop understanding of the sound system in English and the pronunciation of sounds as well as develop public presentation skills in English.
Students will demonstrate:
Academic competences:
1) knowledge about the system of sounds as well as about the pronunciation of monophthongs, diphthongs and consonants;
2) knowledge about transcription symbols and the rules of transcribing;
3) knowledge about the rules for the pronunciation of the plural ending of the noun;
4) knowledge about the rules for the pronunciation of the past ending of the regular verbs;
5) knowledge about staging a play in English.

Professional competences:
1) students will be able to analyse and critically evaluate peculiarities of and imperfections in their pronunciation of the English sounds;
2) using the acquired knowledge, students will improve their pronunciation of the English monophthongs, diphthongs and consonants;
3) students will be able to work as a team to create a public performance, i.e. a play;
4) students will be able to perform publicly in English.
Requirements for obtaining credit points 5 seminars and 5 practical works are planned during the semester.
The final score of the course consists of the following:
1)5 successful practical works – 25%;
2)successful participation in 5 seminars – 25%;
3)successful exam (the play) – 50%.
