Course annotation
This course deals with the historical development of Latvian. Its aim is to acquaint the students with the formation of phonetic and morphophonological system, with the interdependence of the language elements and diachronic functioning.
1.Students obtain the knowledge about the history of the phonetically phonological system of Latvian – vowels and consonants, stress and syllable intonation.
2.Students are able to define and to analyze inherited and innovative phenomena in the system of Latvian.
3.Students are competent in the research literature devoted to the history of Latvian. Proto-Baltic and PIE.

Course plan
1.Content and tasks of the Latvian historical grammar course. 4 (L)
2.The history of sentence stress, word stress and syllable intonation in Latvian. Metathony and its functions. 4 (2L+2S)
3.The history of inherited vocalism. 8 (6L+2S)
4.Changes of the inherited vocalism. 4 (2L+2S)
5.The history of inherited consonantism. 6 (4L+2S)
6.Changes of the inherited consonantism. 6 (4L+2S)
Requirements for obtaining credit points
1. Student has to pass two test works successfully (10 point system). Every test work contains 30% of total evaluation (i.e. 60% together).
2. At the end of the course - exam in written form (40% of total evaluation).
3. Complete evaluation contains average mark of the test works and exam.
4. Attending of lectures and seminars is obligatory.
