Course annotation The aim of the course is to give insight into different theories of first and second language, as well as foreign language acquisition; it concentrates on the mechanisms of language acquisition on all levels of language: phonology, morphology, lexis and syntax; pragmatic aspects of language acquisition are analyzed as well. Language acquisition theories give theoretical basis for language teaching and provide deeper insight into the system of language, its structure and functioning.
Results Upon successful acquisition of this course, students gain the following academic and professional competencies:
•knowledge about the basic principles of first,second and foreign language acquisition on all levels of language,
•skills of analysing children’s langauge as well as second and foreign language learner’s language,
•skills of first and second language teaching,
•deeper knowledge about language growth and the development of language system.

Requirements for obtaining credit points 1.Obligatory attendance of lectures and seminars, successfully attested presentation (the theme of the presentation is chosen by the student and coordinated with the lecturer) – 50%.
2.At the end of the course – a written examination consisting of both theoretical questions and practical analysis of language material – 50%.
