The course constitutes an optional part of the study, sinology students can attend it after two years of intensive Chinese languages "putunhua" learning. Chinese language is abundant in dialects. Their structure and phonetics are very diverse and complex. An introduction into Chinese language dialectology will deepen the insight into Chinese culture in general, as well as supplement skills of Chinese language. On the existant fundament of modern Chinese phonetics and grammar students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with the history, distribution patterns, phonetic and grammatical characteristics of Chinese language dialects. They will learn basic vocabulary and pronunciation of most important Chinese language dialogues. Examples with audio and video fragments from local opera and drama will be analysed, as well.
|Results||After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to distinguish between different Chinese dialects, they will understand some of the most important expressions in some dialects (such as ganhua). Students will master the most common phrases and basic words on a daily basis. Students will learn to discriminate, compare and independent conclusions refering to the Chinese dialectology. The course will give focus also on similarities and differences of the official Chinese languages (putunghua) and dialects, so that students will get a better understanding of diverse aspects of the Chinese language. Through examples of regional drama and opera students will comprehend the actual application and specifics of dialects. They will also learn more about regional culture and get accustommed to different kinds of pronunciation.

|Requirements for obtaining credit points||Regular attendance (at least 75%).
Regular homework and active participation in lessons (50% of the final mark)
Oral examination, conversational phrases (20% of the final mark)
Written examination about history and spread of dialects (30% of the final mark)
