|Course annotation||The course is designed to acquaint students with the basics of Chinese phonetics. The Mandarin Chinese phonetically is based on Beijing dialect's pronunciation and is the official language of Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Since there are approximately 404 syllables in Chinese, lexical meaning of words is expressed through the 4 tones of Mandarin Chinese. The stress is laid on phonetic exercises, listening exercises. In the middle of the semester the course is merged with the course of Chinese characters and the students start to learn everyday spoken language.
