Course annotation
The goals of the course are : 1) to improve and strengthen knowledge about the culture history of Latvia, devoting particular attention to the period from 16th till 18th century as a starting point of Latvian written language and literature; 2) to develop and improve skills in the analyses of various texts – of religious, cultural historical, linguistic and literary type. Course content: an overview of the culture history of Latvia from the 16th century till 20th cnt. in the context of the development of written language and literature (16th-18th cnt.) and main processes from the cultural historical point of view (19th and 20th cnt.).
Academic competencies: 1) good knowledge in Latvian cultural history and early Latvian literature; 2) developed first skills in scientific work. Professional competences: 1) ability to read old Latvian texts and analyse them; 2) mastered skills to motivate views on a prose or poetical text in an oral and written form. 3) ability to compare or contrast isolated fact with a broader cultural context.

Requirements for obtaining credit points
1) 85% attendance of seminars and lectures; those who have missed tutorials, must proof their knowledge at the consultations; 2) passed test in reading old Latvian texts; 3) a test during the course in 18th cnt.literature : 50% from the final evaluation; 4) exam (50%) consists of an answer on two theoretical questions on 19th and 20th cnt.culture history (75%) and text analyses (25%).
