E-courses MākZ4014: Introduction to Theatre Semiotics
Course annotation The aim of the course is to offer knowledge about semiotics as a field which investigates functions of different signs’ systems and ways of their structuring. During the course, an insight is provided into theatre semiotics as a system of knowledge about signs and formation of meanings, as well as specific systems of signs in connection with the theory and practice of theatre. To illustrate theoretical conceptions, the structure of particular performances is analyzed.
Results On successful completion of this course, students have an insight into basic concepts and terminology of the field of semiotics, as well as abilities to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge to the analysis of different kinds of theatre performances. At the end of the course students are able to analyze a theatre performance as a system of signs.

Requirements for obtaining credit points Evaluation depends on the accomplishment of three tasks (in percentage):
1)Regular and active participation in all seminars – 30%;
2)Written analysis of one performance from the point of view of semiotics – 40%;
3)Test on the course content at the exam (final test) – 30%.
