Course annotation The course demonstrates the development of Latvian drama from the middle of the 19th century up to 1945. The main emphasis is laid on the development of dramatic genres and literary schools, as well as on the relation between Latvian drama and the tendencies in European drama. The portrayals of the most outstanding Latvian playwrights are given in the course. Seminars deal with selected plays by Latvian authors.
Results 1)are able to demonstrate knowledge in the history of Latvian literature;
2)have obtained more proficient skills of analysis and interpretation of drama;
3)are able to identify the connection between Latvian drama and European drama, as well as between Latvian drama and Latvian literature;
4)can analyse texts independently, raise relevant questions and argue the issues.

Requirements for obtaining credit points 1. Active participation in seminars – 20%.
2. Report of 7-8 pages on an issue about the history of drama - 40%.
3. Written examination, comprising two questions - 40%.
