E-courses 2FIL1057: Introduction to Philosophy
Course annotation The course introduces with the main branches and basic concepts of philosophy, gives a survey of different approaches how to deal with philosophical issues, and focuses on philosophical argumentation. The aims of study course are following: to develop ability to identify philosophical issues, to provide basic knowledge for further studies of the texts, to encourage reflection on methodological issues of humanities.

Results In the due course of the studies students will acquire
1.knowledge and understanding of the main branches and basic concepts of philosophy, philosophical issues within historical and modern context and different approaches how to deal with them; consequences of philosophical problems in the human life;
2.skills to discern the nature of philosophical problems; to analyze and assess them:
to apply philosophical thinking patterns in social and professional practice.

Course plan 1.Introduction: definition and description of philosophy and the main periods of its historical development. Philosophy in Latvia (lecture 2 hours)
2.Epistemology. The problem of knowledge and truth. Empiricism and Rationalism. Skepticism, pragmatism and nature of intuitive knowledge (lecture 4 hours)
3.The philosophy of science. Language and logic (lecture 2 hours)
4.Test on the problems and concepts of the epistemology (seminar 2 hours)
5.The philosophy of mind: central issues and concepts (lecture 2 hours)
6.The philosophy of religion. Faith, reason, religious language and experience. Arguments for the existence of God and the problem of evil (lecture 4 hours)
7.Religion in the modern world (lecture 2 hours)
8.Test on the problems of the philosophy of religion and basic concepts, religion in the modern world (seminar 2 hours)
9.Ethics, its theories and basic concepts (lecture 3 hours)
10.The problem of the Self (lecture 3 hours)
11.The philosophy of culture and art: main interpretations (lecture 3 hours)
12.What is political philosophy? (lecture 3 hours)


Requirements for obtaining credit points During the term students have to pass successfully two tests (problems and concepts of epistemology and philosophy of religion) – each test give 40% of evaluation; final written examination (extended analysis of one philosophical issue) – 20%.
