Transnationalism and intersectionality both as concepts and as research methodologies are taken as the major focus of the Riga IP, which aims at prioritizing pluralism and “multiperspectivity” in gender studies. The major objective is the advancement of innovative intersectional and transnational methodologies in gender studies as well as in other multi- and interdisciplinary fields of research and pedagogy. Another objective concsists in transmitting skills of translocal/transnational/intersectional analysis in gender research so that young researchers will be competent and qualified to deal with substantive issues of transversalities, mobilities, and multiple identities in the contemporary globalised world.

The Riga IP will contribute materials to the course Virtual Learning Environment (moodle-base). The innovation in terms of learning outcomes is demonstrated both through the application of intersectional and transnational methodologies in the student projects and reports, during interactive sessions and fieldwork exercises, and in the opportunities offered for the participants’ presentations and discussions.

The IP aims to improve the quality and volume of cooperation between higher education institutions. Thus, the IP in Riga brings together partner universities that participated in the Joensuu IP ‘Translocal Methodologies in Gender Studies’ (2012) and expands the consortium by adding one more partner from Czech Republic. Through this trans-regional connection between Joensuu and Riga the IP develops new and multiple pedagogies of teaching methodologies – from translocal to transnational and intersectional methodologies. Especially, it encourages students and teachers to share their experiences and develop new kinds of research methodologies in their current and future research, as well as meet the challenges posed by rapidly changing societies and transnational relations both in Europe and globally in their everyday empirical research: in how they create research settings, develop new kinds of research questions, build data sets and make an effective and qualified use of analytical approaches and traditions in the research of changes, relations, tendencies.
