Please note that the University of Latvia is in the process of accreditation of new study programme “Linguistics, Literature and Regional Culture Studies, subprogram: Russian and Slavic Studies”. This programme will be offered instead of programme “Russian Philology”. Study agreements will be concluded in the programme "Linguistics, Literature and Regional Culture Studies, subprogram: Russian and Slavic Studies” after the license will be received in May/June 2021.

The main goal of the study programme is to develop the research skills in the sphere of the Russian and Slavic philology with the in-depth studying of the Russian language, literature and culture. Students are encouraged to improve their practical skills in translation and interpreting, in project writing and management, in textology and editorial work. Moreover, the students will get an opportunity to work with unique local materials (theatre archives, archives of periodicals, etc). In addition, the students will be able to acquire the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. The programme envisages students’ mobility within the framework of Erasmus in the institutions of higher education of Estonia (Tartu and Tallinn Universities), Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Germany, and many others. After successful completion of the programme, graduates may pursue to continue their academic research in various PhD programmes.

Study period and classes time

Study period for the full-time degree programme is two academic years. Classes are held in the evenings of the working days from 4.30 pm till 9.30 pm.

Career opportunity

The MA degree in Russian Philology enables the graduates to have a number of job opportunities at institutions of secondary and higher education, the EU structures, non-governmental organizations, the publishing industry, mass media, translation centres, etc.  

Admission requirements

1. Bachelor's degree or a HEI diploma proving equivalent level of education in Humanities;

2. English language proficiency.

3. Russian language proficiency.

Enrolment criteria (for students competing for the state-financed study place)

1. The grade obtained in final Bachelor’s exam or the average grade obtained in final exams (40%);

2. Grade point average of undergraduate studies (60%).

Please note! Only EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and EU long-term resident status holders can compete for a state-financed study place.

As a part of the admission process applicants will be asked to participate in an online interview.
