University of Latvia (UL) receives the highest appraisal of all the universities in the country, taking the 92nd place.
Rankings reflect the impact of universities on society based on the success of universities in achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. It gives an idea of the work done by universities and it is an opportunity to highlight substantial achievements of universities that are not rated by rankings of other classifications.
“This is a very positive assessment of the University's performance, which shows that along with focussing on the quality of the study process, the University strives toward the sustainable development of society and commits to solving environmental and sustainable development problems. The assessment achieved by the University of Latvia perfectly ties in with the contribution of the University of Latvia to development planning of Latvia “Formula 2050”, initiated by Professor Mārcis Auziņš,” explains Professor Māris Kļaviņš, Head of the UL Senate. “At the same time, this assessment marks the development directions that should continue to be pursued by the University of Latvia in the future. Criteria that mark development directions – gender equality, quality of education – show that beyond ensuring high quality of education and advanced research, the University takes care that its staff and students are in good health, promotes the welfare of the society and UL employees,” says M. Kļaviņš.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals include ending poverty and hunger, promoting good health, well-being and quality education, achieving gender equality and economic growth, ensuring access to clean water, and ensuring accessible clean energy, promoting innovation, reducing inequalities, building sustainable cities and communities, preventing climate change, ensuring sustainable management of life below water and on land, promoting a peaceful society and renewing global partnerships.
The UL has achieved the best results in categories: decent work and economic growth (32nd place), partnerships for the goals (49th place), sustainable cities and communities (51st place), peace, justice and strong institutions (80th place).
Latvia is represented in these rankings by the UL and Riga Technical University. Leading position in the current ranking is taken by the University of Auckland in New Zealand, followed by McMaster University in Canada and the University of British Columbia in Canada.
