Lai LU Bibliotēkas Zemes un vides zinātņu bibliotēkas krājums tiktu pilnībā izmantots, uzsākta izstāžu sērija – „Iepazīsti LU Bibliotēkas Zemes un vides zinātņu bibliotēkas krājumu!”.

Bieži rodas situācija, kad lietotāji pieprasa vienu populārāko grāmatu, tā izveidojot pieprasījumu rindu konkrētai grāmatai, kurai, iespējams, ir maz eksemplāru, nemaz nenojaušot, ka bibliotēkā ir arī citas līdzīga satura grāmatas par pieprasīto tematu. Lasītāju ievērībai turpmāk bibliotēkā tiks izstādītas grāmatas par kādu noteiktu tēmu, šoreiz – par Ģeogrāfiskās informācijas sistēmām.

Katrā ikdienas dzīves jomā aizvien lielāka loma ir datorizētai informācijai. Daudzās nozarēs notiekošie procesi tiek integrēti ģeogrāfiskās, sociālās, ekonomiskās, politiskās un vides aizsardzības sistēmās, lai spētu rast atbildes uz jautājumiem par to izcelsmi. Tāpēc sabiedrība izmanto informācijas tehnoloģijas, kas izveidotas, lai iegūtu, attēlotu un apstrādātu informāciju. Viena no šīm tehnoloģijām ir Ģeogrāfiskās informācijas sistēmas – ĢIS.

ĢIS sniedz iespēju izmantot dažādus datus vienkopus, balstoties uz šo datu ģeogrāfisko atrašanos, ļaujot tos apskatīt citā veidolā – tabulu un aprakstu formā. Likumsakarības, attīstības iespējas un attiecības starp vidē un sabiedrībā notiekošajiem procesiem, kuras iepriekš nebija iespējas redzēt, izmantojot ĢIS metodes, var ne tikai redzēt, bet arī paredzēt.
